After the indiscretions we reported to you this morning, it is now official Netflix is about to buy Warner Bros Discovery paying $72 billion for HBO Max, HBO and Warner Bros studios of movies and TV series, for a total value of $82.7 billion. The Warner Group therefore accepted this proposal by rejecting those of Comcast (who wanted to buy the same components) and Paramount-Skydance which would also purchase the linear channels of discovery.
The agreement will become binding after the Discovery Global division into two companies that will take place in the third quarter of 2026 (so in summer). In his official release, Netflix said that he intends to keep Warner Bros’ current operations unchanged (we remember that on January 13 HBO Max will arrive in Italy) including cinema releases and that thanks to this agreement will increase production capacity in the United States. Netflix’s other co-CEO Greg Peters stressed how they could introduce even more public to Warner’s stories and worlds. David Zaslav president and CEO of Warner Bros Discovery highlighted how with this agreement they will be able to continue to tell stories that will last over time. Of course now the American Antitrust will have to intervene and even to circumvent it there is the possibility that HBO Max can be ceded from Netflix (which of course will hold Warner content). Surely we are in front of an acquisition that will change the scenario like Disney-Fox a few years ago.

In the immediate future it will change very little. In the future it is more difficult to say, if the agreement exceeds all antitrust analyses it is difficult not to imagine a fusion between Netflix and HBO Max platforms allowing you to have everything in one space, from Stranger Things to Game of Thrones. Some analysts argue that Netflix could sell HBO Max while keeping content, maybe at Comcast that doesn’t have its global platform.
