Ethan Hawke Academy Race

At the beginning of the season of the great film awards, there are as always a handful of films favored and discussed by everyone, but also others who had less media resonance and who could surprise the awards ceremony. In seconds we find this year’s Blue Moon by Richard Linklater, who has been in competition in Berlin and in Italy. Ethan Hawke plays the parolyer Lorenz Hart in the last period of his life; is a bitter (and very dialogued) portrait of a tired and disappointed character, and a great actor test for his interpreter.

Hawke, in fact, is far from the end of his career, and indeed, to 36 years from L’attemo fuggente, which made him a star, is still one of the most active and appreciated American actors. Despite the divo statute, he has always committed himself to maintaining an artistic integrity, without compromise, working both in mainstream cinema and in independent productions. In the second field, the understanding with Linklater has flourished, from before dawn with his trilogy to Boyhood, and passing through underrated works such as Waking Life. Despite some negative and perturbed roles (as in the recent Black Phone and its entourage), they are more reminiscent of its “good” characters, more sensitive and empathic, image that has also taken out of the screen, forming what is its divo identity.

Before the film Hawke was in love with the theater, and also on the stage he had a respectable career, which counts among others the monumental trilogy The Coast of Utopia, of the recently disappeared Tom Stoppard. And it was not limited to acting, citing itself in the direction of theatre and cinema: his last film as a director is Wildcat, a biopic on American writer Flannery O’Connor. In fact, the actor has always had a privileged connection with literature, a passion that led him to write even some novels. Over the years he has succeeded in distinguishing himself as an all-round artist, with great sensitivity and dedicated to the authentic expression of himself in various disciplines.

In 2022 Esquire had designated him as the best actor of his generation, but net of several nominations for Oscar and Golden Globes did not yet get the great Hollywood awards. With Blue Moon, however, it may have come time for Hawke (candidate for the Golden Globe) to officialize the recognition to a career already worthy of note, and that still does not give signs of slowing down.
