Professor and Crazy is the 2019 film with Mel Gibson and Sean Penn directed by P.B. Sherman and inspired by the 1998 world’s most learned killer (The Surgeon of Crowthorne: A Tale of Murder, Madness and the Love of Words) written by Simon Winchester and tells the story of Sir James Murray who in 1879 began working at the Oxford English Dictionary.

Professor and madman is the true story of the genesis of the first English dictionary, set in England of 1879. Professor James Murray is the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. To do this, he asks the common readers to report the words of their knowledge by mail. When the company seems to have reached a dead point, Murray begins to receive the contributions of William Chester, a surgeon of the American army locked up in the criminal asylum of Broadmoor because he killed a worker father of six children and is suffering from psychic turbs and hallucinations. Among the two is an unusual collaboration that turns into an extraordinary friendship.
