Never as in this period of the year we remember that the family is a complicated beast, full of contradictions. It’s also for Kate Winslet: Goodbye June is not only his debut for directing, but is also the first film written by his son Joe Anders, inspired by family events lived by both. With a reduced budget but a star cast, Goodbye June arrived on Netflix on December 24, filling with feelings these days of parties.
Goodbye June: un Natale in reparto
After more than three years, June’s fight against cancer seems to start at the end of the line: the disease has spread and the only thing you can do now is wait for the end. The sad event brings together in June’s hospital room the whole family, the eldest daughter Helen, who lives in Germany does yoga teacher to minor Connor, who still lives at home because of his anxiety issues. The Bernie painting, the burber and repressed husband of June and especially the two daughters of the middle of Julia and Molly: both mothers in turn, with very different lives, have not spoken for years and cannot be seen. With the paw of an increasingly weak June but never devoid of resources, among the corridors of the hospital the family will find themselves to dissolve more than a knot and to spend a last, unusual Christmas together.
Fra il sincero e l’ingenuo
It is difficult to remain impartial while telling a personal story, and Goodbye June is clearly a deeply personal film, both in terms of technical and writing. To show some signs of failure every now and then is perhaps the latter, which stumbles occasionally at a time a little rhetorical or excessively tear tears. All sins are all forgiven, also because the sincere intentions of the film are clear and perceivable throughout its duration.
Goodbye June e la gioia del raccontare
Goodbye June is a sweet bitter film, but the way it is made is deeply joyful. From photography to direction (which proves to be an excellent test for Winslet) to the splendid performances of a cast absolutely stellar, it is clear that what we have in front is an audiovisual product packed with affection despite the imperfections, like the Christmas package a little shoved by a distant aunt.
Il cast
The holder June is interpreted by the inimitable Helen Mirren. In addition to his role behind the room, Kate Winslet plays Julia, the second daughter of the family, oberated by a prestigious work and an avalanche of responsibility. Andrea Riseborough is Molly, who has a difficult character and an even more complicated life. To complete the quartet of the Cheshire brothers are Toni Collette in the role of Helen, a somewhat erupted yoga teacher and with the passion for yellow and Johnny Flynn in that of minor Connor, who still struggles to find himself. In the cast also Timothy Spall as the husband of June Bernie and Fisayo Akinade in those of the sweet nurse Angel, who takes care of the woman in her last days of life.
