Attesissimo, object of very controversial, very critical, very chat and with Italian accent. Ferrari, film by Michael Mann presented at the Cannes Film Festival also arrives on TV Friday 16 January 2026 on Rai 2. Produced by Forward Pass, Storyteller Productions, Moto Productions, Rocket Science, Iervolino & Lady and Bacardi Entertainment is the film adaptation of the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine written by Brock Yates.
Ferrari, un momento nel tempo
The film focuses on a very specific moment of the life of Enzo Ferrari, a former driver and manufacturer of the most famous cars in the world. We’re in Modena in 1957. He and his wife Laura just lost their beloved son Dino, who died of illness in 1956. Enzo must sail among the family crisis, his second home (with Lina and Piero, who can not yet recognize as his) and the collapse of the company, which is in grave difficulty because it does not make enough, and Enzo’s stubbornness makes him put in the foreground the races and neglect the sales. In the background the other mourners (those of friends and drivers at a time of history in which to run was very dangerous), extreme rivalry with Maserati and a chance to redeem: the legendary Mille Miglia.
Ferrari, un film senza picchi emotivi
The premises may also make sense. In a life full of events (and so documented, after all it is a mythological figure in Italy and in the world) like that of Enzo Ferrari, it makes sense that we focus on such a small portion of time. The result, however, is perplimente. Why does nothing seem to happen? The film lacks emotional peaks, it does not return the human component. Enzo Ferrari moves on the screen as a block of stone, ieratic as the sphinx, and even when he cries or worries does not stir anything. We discover little or nothing about man. Which is ironic, which is determined, which would calpest more than one rule for its car manufacturer. And then? Not to mention the female characters, who are barely figurines. How do you waste Penelope Cruz like this? Even when, towards the end, between the two spouses things arrive at a point of no return and Laura puts his conditions it is not shown on the screen the decision of Enzo, who could make us decide whether he was an integral man or only yet another heartless speculator, but very lucky. The story already knew, who watches the film though not. Ferrari remains carved, but never comes to life. Too bad.
La componente visiva: il troppo stroppia?
To save from the lack of general heat we think (or try) photography, cinematography and in general racing scenes, which are turned to perfection and are exciting and beautiful to see. Maybe too much? The feeling is that this cleans and refines the sequences to perfection at the end, instead of filling the holes ends up emphasizing them, returning us a film maybe perfect but surely icy.
Il cast
Adam Driver is Enzo Ferrari himself, in all his stubbornness. Penélope Cruz is Laura Ferrari, a great and unscrupulous wife. Shailene Woodley is Lina Lardi, patient lover. In the cast also Patrick Dempsey, Jack O’Connell, Sarah Gadon and Gabriel Leone.
