The Marcher – the real story of Abdon Pamich, the TV film on Rai 1 on the day of memory

The Marcher – the real story of Abdon Pamich is the TV film broadcast on Rai 1 Tuesday, February 10th on the occasion of the day of the commemoration in memory of the victims of the foibe, the Jewish-Dalmata exodus, of the events of the eastern border of the second post-war period. The film is a Clemart production in collaboration with Rai Fiction, directed by Alessandro Casale.

Chi è Abdon Pamich

“The portrait of a man who has made his lifestyle, determination and resilience. His march is not only athletic discipline, but an existential metaphor. A journey started between the rubble of war and approached the Olympic glory,” said the director. Abdon Pamich was a marcher, one of the most medallion in the Olympics, bronze in Rome, now in Tokyo ’64. He was a phhuman refugee, raised in the field of Novara and then moved to Genoa where he started to do sports. He has always been involved in the preservation of the historical memory of the Jewish-Dalmatian community.

La trama de Il Marciatore

Abdon Pamich is still walking. Senior, on a karst plateau, walk along a road belonging to his childhood. That simple and stubborn gesture opens a fracture over time and brings back the gaze to Rijeka, a border town overturned by History, in the Second World War.

The announcement of liberation lights up a short and luminous hope. Abdon and his elder brother John believe normal is finally possible. But the arrival of the new Yugoslav power breaks the illusion. Uncle Cesare, a boxing coach, a charismatic figure and a moral guide of the boys, is taken “for clarification”. The father undergoes political pressure that makes him suspicious for the new regime and vulnerable as a scapegoat. River changes name, language and face. For the Italians begins the time of fear.

Caesar manages to expatriate. Shortly afterwards, Abdon’s father fled to Italy, hoping to build a future and recall his own. The expectation, however, becomes unsustainable. Arrests and disappearances multiply, borders close. Abdon and John, still adolescents, choose not to yield to despair. They leave alone.

The escape is a desperate race towards the border: they lose the train, they face thirty kilometers walk under the sun, with light shoes and a few liras in their pocket. In Italy refugee camps, poverty and distrust await them. The brothers, however, manage to continue their studies. Everything that Abdon saw and learned in Rijeka opens a door to the school and, shortly after, in sport.

In Genoa he meets a formidable coach Giuseppe Malaspina, the Mago of the march, who recognizes in that boy a rare quality: the ability to resist, to last. The march becomes for Abdon the language of the esule: I do not take it, but the continuous step; not escape, but go on, always.

After years of silent and defeated work, Olympic gold arrives in Tokyo, crowning a human path, even before it sports.
