Blossoms Shanghai, the TV series of Wong Kar Wai on MUBI from 26 February

The Blossoms Shanghai series by internationally renowned director Wong Kar Wai will debut on MUBI from February 26 with the top 10 episodes. The series will be released in three parts, each consisting of ten episodes lasting 45 minutes, with new episodes coming out every four weeks, for a total of 30 episodes. It will stream exclusively on MUBI in Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Turkey.

Based on the award-winning novel Blossoms by Jin Yucheng, the series marks Wong Kar Wai’s television debut, which brings his unmistakable film vision into the wide-ranging serial story, personally directing all episodes. The series debuted in China with an extraordinary success, ranking first on all channels for the entire duration of the broadcast, and imposes itself as one of the most ambitious television projects made in recent years by a great international author.

Famous for his researched visual language and his extraordinary narrative ability, Wong Kar Wai transfuses his unmistakable style, evocative photography, dense atmospheres and a keen sense of time and desire, giving life to a powerful and evocative portrait of Shanghai’s cultural and emotional landscape.

Blossoms Shanghai, la trama

Set in the glittering Shanghai of the Nineties, Blossoms Shanghai recounts the rise of Ah Bao, as any man to famous magnate known as “Mr. Bao”. Guided by mentor Zio Ye, restaurateur Ling Zi and Miss Wang of the Foreign Trade Office, Ah Bao takes the opportunity of a reborn city thanks to economic reforms. But when a mysterious woman opens the restaurant The Grand Lisbon, her golden world begins to crack, revealing the fragile balance between success, memory and desire.

The cast includes Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Tang Yan, Xin Zhilei and You Benchang, whose interpretations give solidity and depth to the great narrative fresco at the center of the series.
