Project Hail Mary is a space opera from the tender heart – The review

The film pedigree of the creative couple Phil Lord-Christopher Miller is difficult to frame: from Jump Street to Lego Movie, from Piovono Polpette to Solo: At Star Wars Story, the two seem to be dexterating with a very different genre and size. The last mission: Project Hail Mary seems to be their most ambitious project, written by Drew Goddard on the basis of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel. The film is an Amazon MGM production and arrives on our screens Thursday 19 March for Sony Pictures Italy.

Project Hail Mary: lost in space

A man wakes up from the coma without any memory of where he is and why. From the objects around him he discovers that he is called Ryland Grace and being the last survivor on Hail Mary, a spacecraft traveling across the galaxy. Slowly Grace reconstructs her story: from the appearance of mysterious particles called astrophages that are rapidly weakening the sun, threatening the survival of life on earth, to her recruitment from the middle school in which she teaches the mysterious Hail Mary Project, which hopes to find a remedy for astrophages in a distant stellar system. Finally at the destination, the shoes of the scientist are not the only ones that Grace will find to dress, because apparently it is not the only one to look for a remedy to astrophanages..

Il macro…

Among the colossal that I have seen in the last year, Project Hail Mary is undoubtedly what is more capable of giving us a sense of scale. Not only because its plot is a huge (literally planetary), but because it is a film decidedly does not compromise in telling it. Greg Frasier with his cinematography manages more than anyone else to make us feel the inconceivable vastness of space and at the same time the overwhelming claustrophobia of life in astronave. The visual quality of miniatures, set design and visual effects can give that sense of reality and depth to the world on the screen, for once without if and without but, bringing us almost to the sense of wonder of the science fiction of our childhood.

… e il micro

What really does the film work is that Project Hail Mary is smart enough to make this spectacular plant not focus, but simply a structure supporting a story that is very small, very human. Because under that of the last mission is not a story of admirable adventure as one who speaks of communication, cooperation, and the courage of small things, supported by a Ryan Gosling capable of holding two hours and forty of total attention of the camera with ease and charm. Absolutely recommended, especially if you loved Arrival.

Il cast

The absolute protagonist of the film is Ryan Gosling in the role of Dr. Grace, a science teacher who is found to be the unlikely depositary of the hopes of the solar system. Sandra Hüller is Eva Stratt, a government officer at the head of the Hail Mary Project, always accompanied by the trusted security guard Carl (Lionel Boyce). Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub interpret the other astronauts aboard Hail Mary, while Priya Kansara lends her voice to the ship. Finally, James Ortiz lends his voice and coordinates Rocky’s movements, an enigmatic creature that Grace meets during her intergalactic journey.
