As long as death do not separate us 2 – a avoidable sequel but that it entertains

Two years from Abigail, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin go back behind the camera as long as death do not separate us 2 (trailer), sequel to the 2019 film, continuing the narration of the events of Grace (Samara Weaving) burst into the game of the massacre on the day of his wedding. In Italy it will land in the hall from April 9 for Searchlight Pictures.

The feature film resumes the final of the previous film and shows us Grace in convalescence in the hospital. While a skeptical cop interrogates her in the room Faith (Kathryn Newton), her younger sister with whom she no longer has a relationship, called as the only emergency contact. There is very little time for the convents, because hunting starts again soon and the two sisters will face a new persecution to the last blood.

The film is an almost pedisseous reproduction of the first chapter, with the addition of new characters and a wider conflict: Grace’s family of fathers was part of a satanic cult of five families that control the order of the world. The unexpected survival of the bride recalled the hierarchies that can only be restored with his death. The game played is the same and the rules also, only that this time the winners, including Grace, will be able to control the world.

Just seven years from the previous chapter, until death separates us 2 appears as a long-term nostalgia operation, Grace in fact wears the same identical bloody dress and faces the same misfortunes. More than anything else is the cast that clashes the eye to a pop culture now historical, with the addition of Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Cronenberg but above all Elijah Wood, a lawyer in charge of managing the succession of a notorious ring of power.

As long as death does not separate us 2 is a little inspired sequel that does not add new ideas to the first chapter, already perfectly self-conclusive, struggling to construct a coherent and sliding narrative. Many gags seem to be put in force and at various times the writing of the dialogues is too built, with syparietti that draw on a genuine imagination in reality already exceeded. The moments of action maintain the rhythm but are not well dosed with the comedian-grotteschi ones who had made the fortune of the first film, now a horror comedy of worship.

The affectionate viewer will enjoy seeing her beniamin Grace return to the screen, thanks to the magnetic performance of Samara Weaving, one of the most talented and charismatic contemporary scream queens, who builds a true and recognizable character. The addition of Kathryn Newton is also particularly appreciated, which after Freaky (2020) and Lisa Frankenstein (2024), proves to be totally comfortable in roles outside the box. In this context, the addition of Sarah Michelle Gellar responds to the precise operation of bringing together three different generations of scream queens, for the joy of different generations of spectators.

The theme of complex brotherhood seems to resume the operation carried out by directors and screenwriter Guy Busick in Scream (2022), where the characters of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega tried to face a common enemy and in the meantime rebuild their relationship. In fact, however in conflict, between the two sisters there is a miserable affection and the perverse game seems the opportunity for Grace to show Faith that this time she will not let her go. Unlike the Wes Craven saga, here this aspect is not significantly developed, a missed opportunity also to resume the ambiguous relationship of the two sisters towards evil.
The only other counterpoint on the concept of brotherhood is the relationship between the twins Danforth, Ursula (Gellar) and Titus (Shawn Hatosy), also willing to betray each other at any time to obtain power.

As long as death does not separate us 2 is a avoidable sequel of a film already widely self-conclusive, but it entertains the viewer affectionate thanks also to the extraordinary performance of the two protagonists.
