Dante la trama
The Dante film takes us back to September 1350. Giovanni Boccaccio is in charge of bringing ten golden florins as symbolic compensation to Sister Beatrice, daughter of Dante Alighieri, a nun in Ravenna in the monastery of Santo Stefano degli Ulivi.
Dante died in exile in 1321 while his fame, thanks to the release of the Comedy, spread everywhere. His last twenty years were terrible, constantly escaping, seeking hospitality at the various courts, with a condemnation of the rogue and decapitation inflicted both to him and his male children fled in turn from Florence.
Meanwhile, in the Tuscan capital, the balances of power are deeply changed and the city seeks a reappearance, albeit posthumous, with a fellow citizen of this value. The ten florins would be the symbolic compensation for the confiscation of goods and for the condemnation of being burned alive and beheaded decreed almost half a century before by the Florentine commune. Against that part of the ecclesial world which considers the Diabolic Commedia, Giovanni Boccaccio accepts this task in the conviction of being able to carry out an investigation on Dante that allows him to tell the human story and the injustices suffered.
In his long journey Boccaccio besides his daughter will meet those who, in the last years of the exile ravennate, sheltered and offered welcome and who, on the contrary, rejected and fled the exile.
Retracing from Florence to Ravenna a part of what was Dante’s journey, stopping in the same convents, in the same villages, in the same castles, in the widening of the same libraries, in the questions he poses and in the answers he gets, Boccaccio reconstructs Dante’s human affair, until he can tell us his entire story.
