Masters of the Universe, the review: a film of pure entertainment and enjoyment not to take too seriously

It was the 80s, maybe the early 90s, at home the afternoon you turned on TV and you found yourself in front of a muscle mister who with a fringe skirt raised the sword shouting “For the power of Grayskull” fighting against an enemy shaped as a skeleton. You had no thoughts, worries, a tablet with which to distract you, a direct Twitch to see. This carefree spirit is what tries to recover Masters of the Universe, a $200 million budget car, produced by Amazon (and then soon on Prime) and Mattel, at the cinema since June 4.

Masters of the Universe, la recensione

There is the nostalgic element, there is the game, there is a young protagonist and loved by the young, what could go wrong? Probably all seen the high costs and above all a disinterest that wraps the He-Man puppet. Many will have played us but hardly anyone has more thought of us in recent years, especially, unlike the Barbie phenomenon that has become a sort of critical film of the society of appearance, Masters of the Universe has nothing of all this. A film of pure entertainment and enjoyment, two hours that bend space-time and transport the viewer to another dimension made of dreams and fantasies.

The first thing to avoid is to take Masters of the Universe too seriously. A film in which actors also play a tone above, with lightness, knowing to work between green screens and scenes on the computer. The general spirit is that of an amateur film in which everyone seems to have had the brilliant idea to make laugh and decide to put it inside the film, which then was taken by the friend with money and worked on the computer. Everything is color and fun, there is little to want to study or analyze. Masters of the Universe has those colorful lights that make you think is about to start a crossover with Jem and Holograms, completing the revival of the past.

Un carrozzone divertente

Nicholas Galitzine filled with muscles to become the He-Man puppet but did not lose that air as a good boy that will always make it impossible to interpret the role of a villain. It has just that air of the high school lyx quarterback of the American TV series, elected king of the dance, popular but that does not bully others and protects the weakest even at the cost of sacrificing his popularity. Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin,
Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley and Idris Elba enrich a cast that completes with the presence of Jared Leto as Skeletor.

The film is so aware of being a wagon of pure entertainment, which jokes about the need to find a depth to the villain, typical of so many movies of heroes who in the past always sought a justification for evil. Skeletor’s just bad, but he’s still only a skeleton. Perhaps the thing that can be reprimanded to Masters of the Universe is not having kept this goliardic and ironic air, trying to join the classic themes typical of these films. Ah I recommend you stay until the end of all credits because there is a post credit scene (predictable and phone call, but present).
