Tom Hiddleston brings us to Pompeii with a new format coming from July 23 on Disney+: I pumped out of time with Tom Hiddleston, a docudrama in three episodes produced by Plimsoll Productions. The Loki of the Marvel universe, a secret agent in The Night Manager, is behind a show that merges scripted film drama and investigative documentary, which transports the public to the ancient Roman city in the previous hours and during the eruption of Vesuvius.
The original soundtrack of the series, with music by composer Aisling Brouwer, will be released for Hollywood Records on July 24, 2026 and will be available on all music streaming platforms.
Pompei fuori dal tempo con Tom Hiddleston, il viaggio nel passato
Guided by a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists and disaster experts, Hiddleston brings to light extraordinary evidence – and the stories of real people questioning the convictions rooted in Pompeii and his last hours – revealing, last but not least, that many of those who were overwhelmed by the disaster had the opportunity to survive.
With a simple hand gesture, Tom Hiddleston, returns back in time, immersing himself in cinematographic sequences that tell the lives of true Romans overwhelmed by the eruption of Vesuvius.
Through the stories of a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Pretorian Guard, Hiddleston reconstructs how each of them had to face impossible choices in the face of the looming disaster. As the volcano wakes up and begins the countdown towards the catastrophe, the clues converge in an exciting race against time to find out who survived, who lost his life and what determined their destiny.
Le dichiarazioni
“The ancient world has always stimulated my imagination and my curiosity, since I remember: I have always fascinated it,” said Hiddleston. “Classical antiquity is the foundation and testament of Western and European culture. Visiting Pompeii means perceiving how the 2,000 years that separate us from that time seem suddenly reduced. The past becomes present; the past seems so close.
“Tangible, authentic and real. Our relationship with the past is alive: we study who we were to understand who we are. Pompeii is a gateway to this conversation. It is a privilege to present this visually engaging and dynamic series. Pompeii is often remembered how his story ended. But looking closer, we can discover the details of people’s lives, the choices they made and the moments that preceded the burial of the city. Revisiting the last hours of those ordinary people, overwhelmed by an event outside the city, and helping to bring back these extraordinary human stories to light, is a real honor.”.

Thanks to an innovative film vision, shaped by his work in the Marvel Loki series, executive producer Kevin R. Wright contributes to reinventing the way history is brought to the screen for contemporary audiences. By combining cutting-edge archaeological discoveries, analysis of experts and a deeply personal narrative, the series redefines the story of Pompeii not as a history of destruction, but as a human drama of resilience, sacrifice and survival, revealing the lives, choices and destinies of those who lived in the shadow of Vesuvius.
“For over a century, National Geographic has relived the past through revolutionary discoveries, explorations and a high-level storytelling,” said Tom McDonald, EVP of Content, National Geographic. “Working with Tom and Kevin, together with the Plimsoll team led by showrunner Tom Barbor-Might, was a process that allowed us to create a completely new kind of historical programs, able to merge concrete evidence and imagination in a way that is truly unique.”.
Oltre lo schermo
Nationalgeographic.it will publish a wide article on three Roman cities buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, which will also be published in the National Geographic magazine. Thanks to artificial intelligence and advanced DNA analysis, researchers are discovering new aspects of life in ancient Rome: class and gender dynamics in Oplontis, lost and so far unreadable writings from the carbonized Herculaneum rolls, as well as diets and diseases emerged from a Pompeii latrine. The results reveal a surprisingly attentive society to inequalities, health and the search for a satisfying life.
