A thriller with sci-fi veins full of absurdity and social satire, arrives on Sky Cinema and NOW Bugonia, the Yorgos Lanthimos film with Emma Stone, presented in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and candidate for four Oscar® awards. Unappreciated and exalted as other films of the director, Bugonia seeks a way perhaps more rational and linear than his previous works, focusing more on the absurd madness of his characters and their reactions than in history itself.
Bugonia is a powerful social criticism of a Greek director who looks with amazement and surprise to the United States, not understanding a country made of huge contradictions, which has a patinated image of the great cosmopolitan cities, inclusive and progressive, but has inside boundless lande closed, impaurite, impoverished and for this often less and less acculturated, abandoned to their laws and customs. That clash between cities and suburbs that is the basis of our global societies.
The mad history of two last, followers of conspiracy theories, is the emblem of the people’s struggle against corporations and power. As this goes on depends on many different factors.
“In today’s world, people live in bubbles exalted by technology,” says Yorgos Lanthimos. “I wanted to question the viewer’s convictions about what we are so certain about, about the judgments we give about certain types of people.” Emma Stone, on her fifth project with Lanthimos, describes the film as a “microcosmic” narrative experiment, where multiple versions of humanity emerge in a closed space. “We are in a basement, and for most of the time people speak only among themselves,” the actress observes, “they also reveal different versions of humanity, and what can happen in a downward spiral in which we convince ourselves of something.”.
Bugonia, la trama
The protagonists are two young people obsessed with conspiracy theories that kidnap Michelle Fuller (the winner of two Oscar® awards, three Golden Globes and a Fox Cup at the Venice Film Festival Emma Stone), a powerful CEO who believes that it is an alien coming to destroy the Earth. Chained in a basement, Michelle finds herself face-to-face with Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and Don (Aidan Delbis), two believers of the dark web and their paranoids, in an increasingly visceral, unpredictable confrontation and, at times, even moving.
