Among the most anticipated films of 2026 is L’Odissea, the new kolossal directed by Christopher Nolan, who arrives in Italian theatres on July 16. After the success of Oppenheimer, Oscar-winning director faces for the first time one of the most famous poems in world literature, transforming Ulisse’s journey into a great film adventure shot with IMAX technologies and an international cast.
Produced by Universal Pictures, the film represents one of the most ambitious productions of the film’s career and brings on the big screen a reinterpretation of Homer’s poem faithful to the epic spirit of the work, but recounted with the cinematographic language that made Nolan one of the most appreciated authors of recent decades. Turned between Morocco, Sicily, Greece, Scotland and other places of the Mediterranean, The Odyssey was created using new IMAX technologies developed specifically for production. As already happened with Dunkirk, Tenet and Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan preferred practical effects and external shooting, limiting the use of computer graphics.
La trama
The film tells the long journey of Ulysses, king of Itaca, in an attempt to return home after the Trojan War. A path full of evidence, encounters and dangers that will lead him to confront legendary creatures, divinity and seemingly unsurpassed obstacles, while at Itaca his wife Penelope and his son Telemaco await his return.

For L’Odissea, Christopher Nolan brought together one of the most prestigious casts of recent years. Matt Damon portrays Ulysses (Odisseus), the king of Itaca, the protagonist of the long journey back after the Trojan War, while Tom Holland dresses up the cloths of Telemaco, the son who embarks on his own path in search of his father.
Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, the wife of Ulysses who awaits her return to Itaca resisting the pressures of the Proci, while Zendaya is Athena, the goddess of wisdom that protects and guides the hero during his journey.
Other confirmed roles include Charlize Theron as the Circe Maga, Lupita Nyong’o as Clitennestra, Benny Safdie as Agamennone and Jon Bernthal as King Menelaus.
