In New Dawn: plot and why the new soul is one of the summer events

From July 23rd to 29th he arrives in the Italian theatres as a special event A New Dawn, the new animation film released by Animagine, the film series born from the collaboration between Dynit and Adler Entertainment dedicated to contemporary souls and great classics. Presented in competition at the 76th Berlinale and awarded with the Jury Prize in the Contrechamp section at the Annecy Festival, the feature film marks the debut at the direction of Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, an animator known for making the striking flashbacks of Your Name.

With a visual style that combines hand-drawn 2D animation, stop motion, clay animation and watercolors, A New Dawn addresses themes such as the transformation of landscape, memory and the difficult balance between progress and tradition, telling a story of formation set in a coastal town of Japan.

La trama di A New Dawn

The story revolves around Keitaro Obinata, who grew up in the historic factory of fireworks of his family, but was destined to be demolished due to a project of urban requalification. The boy dreams of completing the Shuhari, a spectacular firework created by his father before his mysterious disappearance.

When Kaoru, the childhood friend who moved to Tokyo, returns to his native country after four years, he finds a deeply changed place. The forest has left room for a huge stretch of solar panels, the bay is draining and the factory that marked their childhood is now close to the definitive closure. Together with Sentiro, the elder brother of Keitaro, the three decide to attempt an enterprise that seems impossible: to complete and launch the Shuhari before that world is erased forever.

Un anime che riflette sul rapporto tra progresso e memoria

The idea of the film was born from an episode personally experienced by director Yoshitoshi Shinomiya. During a car trip, the son exchanged for the sea a vast expanse of solar panels reflecting sunlight. From that image a reflection was born on the transformations of Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of 2011, between reconstruction, economic development and loss of traditional landscapes.

In New Dawn, he addresses themes such as cementification, gentrification and the relationship between man and the environment without sacrificing the emotional dimension of the story, putting in the center the bond with the places of childhood and the value of collective memory.

Un riconoscimento internazionale prima dell’arrivo in Italia

Before the Italian release, A New Dawn has already won important awards in the main film festivals dedicated to animation. The film was presented in competition at the 76th Berlinale and won the Jury Prize in the Contrechamp section of the Annecy International Film Festival, one of the most prestigious events in the industry.

Quando esce al cinema

In New Dawn will be distributed in Italian theatres from 23 to 29 July as a special event thanks to Animagine, the film festival born from the collaboration between Dynit and Adler Entertainment, dedicated to the best Japanese animation films.
