The pickleball, the sport that in recent years has won millions of fans in the United States, becomes the protagonist of The Dink – Wizard of the pickleball, the new original comedy of Apple TV directed by Josh Greenbaum. The film debuted on July 24 on the streaming platform and saw Jake Johnson as a former tennis talent forced to reinvent himself when an injury changed his career.
Produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films and Rivulet Entertainment, the film mixes sports, comedy and personal ransom, with the participation of some real tennis stars like Andy Roddick and John McEnroe.
La trama
Dusty Boyd was considered a tennis promise, but his career never took off as he hoped. Now away from the big tournaments, he works as an instructor of a group of children in a suburban country club run by his father Chuck, decided to counter the growing popularity of the pickleball within the structure.
When an old injury prevents him from playing tennis, Dusty is forced to question all his beliefs. What initially seems to be a compulsory choice soon turns into a new opportunity: thanks also to the encounter with Candace, he discovers the pickleball and ends up passionate about a sport that until recently had despised.
Divided between the desire to conquer his father’s approval and the possibility to build a new identity, Dusty will have to deal with the failures of the past and his historic childhood rival, Andy Roddick, involving himself in a decisive challenge for the club’s future.
