A historical thriller that tells the last years of Henry VIII’s reign from an unpublished point of view: that of his sixth and last wife, Katherine Parr. The Last Queen – Firebrand, directed by Karim Aïnouz and presented in competition at the 7th Cannes Film Festival, sees protagonists Alicia Vikander and Jude Law in a reinterpretation of the Tudor court between political intrigues, psychological tension and struggle for survival. The film tells a woman determined to defend her own ideas and autonomy at a time when power was firmly in the hands of men, offering a different perspective on one of the most famous pages of English history. The Last Queen – Firebrand is taken from Elizabeth Fremantle’s novel The Queen’s Move, tries to go beyond the classic costume film, proposing a modern reading of the figure of Katherine Parr, transforming the court of Tudor into a place dominated by suspects, power games and political tension.
La trama
In the England of Tudor, Katherine Parr is appointed regent while her husband, Henry VIII, is engaged in war. Woman learned and supportive of the ideas of the Protestant Reformation, tries to guide the country according to its principles.
But the return of the sovereign changes every balance. More and more ill, suspicious and unpredictable, Henry triggers a violent persecution against the reformers, leading to condemning Katherine’s friend to the stake. Forced to hide his own pain and convictions, the queen finds herself at the center of a court dominated by plots and betrayals, where every false step could cost her life, as already happened to many of the previous wives of the king.
