Spider-Man: Brand New Day is pure Cine-Cola – The review

The new joint venture chapter between Marvel and Sony dedicated to Spider-Man has big shoes to fill: the previous No way home was able to please criticism and delight the audience, bringing home the highest recess of 2021. Taking up the story from where we left it and at the same time trying to start a new cycle, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already brought the hype to the stars: we have a film capable of challenging the blockbusters of the summer or perhaps we have to modulate the expectations? Let’s find out with the cinema from July 29th.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day: la dura vita dell’eroe

Since the world has forgotten him, life has become easier and harder for Peter Parker. On the one hand Peter can devote himself full time to fighting crime as Spider-Man, and New York thanks: the streets have never been so secure and the city (as well as its police force) loves him. On the other hand, however, it is a solitary existence, passed to look from afar MJ and Ned to go to MIT and start the life they had once dreamed together.

I mean, Spidey has become a drug addict and it is a part that definitely does not fit, but that continues to act for the good of the city.
This at least until a new, mysterious enemy appears on the scene, determined to attack the Department of Damage Control and armed with seemingly unstoppable powers of mental control that begin to wake up unexpected side effects in Peter’s DNA.

La rivincita dei secchioni

Even a really bad movie is an incredibly complicated object to put together. So when I say that Brand New Day is a very dry movie, don’t take it as a demerit note: it just means he did his homework, and he did them well. It is an entertainment machine that ticks with Swiss precision, managing to keep our brains tickled for all its two hours and twenty-five duration, which do not weigh. The film enjoys, destabilizes, squeezes the eye (you can see too much) and gives us views of a New York at the same time realistic and fairytale.

Pur sempre una marvelata

The other side of the medal is of course that doing things in a way meansifca leave little room for experimentation, but what did you expect? It is at the end always a Marvel blockbuster, removing points for predictability would be intellectually dishonest.
That said, the fact that the superheroistic genre can be much more than just a tickle-neuroni machine is prepared, and certainly Brand New Day has no je ne sais quoi, no special sauce capable of making it transcend.
In short: if some films are like bon-bon, ready to surprise us and delight us, Brand New Day is more like a can of frozen coke in the middle of summer. Fresh, easy, titillating, not particularly nutritious and absolutely predictable. And sometimes exactly what it takes.

Il cast

Tom Holland is the young Peter Parker, who after the events of No Way Home decided to devote himself full-time to his Spider-Man career. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are MJ and Ned, respectively former girlfriend and best friend of Peter who forgot. But New York is also full of super: Return Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher (which is appropriate to some of the best scenes of the film) and Florence Pugh in that of the Black Widow.
In the cast also Marisa Tomei, Tramell Tillman and Sadie Sink.
