After conquering audiences, critics and awards with his Parasite (2019), the Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho finally returns to the beginning with a science fiction film. Mickey 17, from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, has been released in Italian cinemas since March 6, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Italy and is on Sky and NOW from 1 December 2025.
Mickey 17: una vita sacrificabile
To escape the relentless assholes who are looking for him, Mickey Barnes embarks on an interplanetary expedition led by a failed political Istrian. The only available work is, however, Sacrificabile: and when his body dies is reconstituted and his replanted memories. This, at least, until one day is left dead in the frozen steppe, and when he returns he discovers that his replacement has already been produced. Two problems: the first is that the doubles are very forbidden; The second is his replacement is a goddamn sociopath, and he also wants to steal his girlfriend..
Lo spazio allegorico
Nothing in Mickey 17 is direct allegory of nothing, but it cannot be denied that parallelisms with the current political climate are many. From the character of Kenneth Marshall, the greedy and stupid antagonist exposedly interpreted by Mark Ruffalo, with his research of the ‘perfect white planet’ and his propensity for red hats, up to the treatment of far greater themes of communication and cohabitation. But, on the other hand, Bong Joon-ho has never spared himself in putting on screen his world vision in clear letters.
Mickey 17 e il senso della fantascienza
The fact that the film is politically deployed fairly clearly does not mean that it is boring. Mickey 17 is not ashamed even for a second of his being a science fiction film, and that which starts as a genre story with an interesting premise becomes an epic to the cardiopalm capable of holding the viewer on the edge of the seat. Sometimes sitting and entertaining is more than enough.
The cast
Robert Pattinson is Mickey Barnes, an expendable in all its progressive versions, while Naomi Ackie is his partner Nasha, an elite agent of archalogy security. Mark Ruffalo is Kenneth Marshsall, a failed politician and leader of the expedition, while Toni Collette is his wife Ylfa, a woman with a left obsession with salsa. Finally, Steven Yeun is Timo, Mickey’s childhood friend and merge, while Anamaria Vartolomei is Kai, another expeditionary agent with a secret crush on Mickey.
