F1 arrives on Apple TV, the review: the film is vacuous and perfect

Jeff Kosinski tries the doubling: after the confused Spiderhead brackets clearly returns to the mix of adrenaline and Top Gun cynicism: Maverick. And if for the previous nostalgia operation he had chosen as a partner no less than the American Navy, at this tour he collaborates with Lewis Hamilton and with the FIA, the superpowerful federation that holds the monopoly on motor racing. F1: The film was released in the cinemas on June 25, achieving success even beyond expectations. From December 12 it is available on Apple TV.

F1: redenzione, velocità, gloria e liberazione

Sonny Hayes lives to run: son of a mechanic, raised on the track, incredible astro born of Formula 1 in the 1990s until the tragic accident that has truncated his career. Since then it has become a sort of motorsport swallow, a nomad looking for adrenaline that refuses to bind to a place or a team. This until it is reached by Ruben, teammate of the golden times, with a proposal: back to race in Formula 1 in his team, Apex GP.

The situation in the stable is tragic: the car does not go as it should, the board of directors is close to forcing Ruben to sell to cover debts and the other driver, JP, is a young recruit more concerned about the next engagement than the fate of Apex. But as usual, for Sonny all this doesn’t matter. It matters running. And for once, the chance to return to the top of the world.

Horror vacui

I’m furious, I’m telling you, with this movie. Because beyond my personal opinions on Brad Pitt (which are not positive) and Formula 1 as a sport (which I find quite boring), this is a bad and fantastic film at the same time. It is bad because it is pure entertainment, in the worst sense of the term: completely without soul, does not think of things, does not have an interiority or an idea of the world, the pneumatic vacuum. It is definitely too invague of its protagonist — both as a character, and in the physicality of a Brad Pitt in excellent form on which the film dwells constantly, and the love story is so rigid and useless that it is not even worth looking for two or three bad synonyms.

F1 e i vantaggi della secchionaggine

But F1 is also great, because it is pure entertainment, in the best sense of the term. Clean, hypercinetic, aerodynamic. So meticulously designed from a structural point of view to take you exactly where it wants to bring you, emotionally and sensorially speaking. Formally majestic, it brings on the screen the kinetic overload of the physical experience of a motorsport that, as I have already mentioned, I usually find quite boring.
So: watching F1 is not mandatory: do it with knowledge of cause. If you end up seeing him, though, do it at the movies. It is one of those films seen on the silver screen — especially a good screen, in a room with good audio — affect in a whole other way.

Il cast

Brad Pitt is Sonny Hayes, born and raised to run, with a last chance to chase glory. Damson Idris is Joshua “JP” Pierce, a young second guide of Apex, rich in talent but with so much to learn. Kerry Condon is Kate McKenna, the very specific technical director of Apex GP, while Javier Bardem is Ruben Cervantes, an old friend of Sonny from the times of Formula 1 and owner of the indebted team to the neck. In the cast also Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia and Sarah Niles.
