Shark teeth, Italian magic realism – The review

Do you remember Dogman, the 2018 film directed by Matteo Garrone? His places, his darkness. Denti da shark, directed by Davide Gentile and written by Valerio Cilio and Gianluca Leoncini, takes full hands from those atmospheres, lightening them and adding a spark of intrusimiglianza and magic. The film, produced by Goon Films, Lucky Red, Ideacinema con Rai Cinema and in collaboration with Prime Video arrives on Rai 4 Monday, December 15. Shark teeth won the Solinas Award for Best Screenplay.

Denti da squalo, una storia di dolore e scoperta

Walter is 13 years old, he just lost his father (who died during his work as a worker to save a colleague) and he wants to rebel against a squalid reality that seems to take it with him. During his cycling adventures, he sneaks into a villa. In the pool of this villa, which seems to know quite well almost instinctively, there is a shark. This discovery changes its summer and life. As it is understandable, Walter becomes very interested in the animal and its well-being.

In returning to the pool he makes friends with Carlo, who presents himself as the guardian of the villa, which belongs to the largest criminal in the area. Together, they will get into trouble, and they will spend a summer of danger but also of discovery, acceptance and freedom.

Denti da squalo, il realismo magico arriva nel cinema italiano

There is no need to tell you that the story of the shark is inverosimile and a metaphor. A metaphor that, however, works. The young protagonist unleashed feelings of empathy and tenderness, his encounter with the predator of the seas is the entrance into the true, hard and difficult life of the working families of the Roman coast and the suburban palaces. The relationship between Walter and the shark, which is also the relationship between Walter and his father, the mourning and the confusion that left his death within him, changes over time, as the boy becomes aware of the world and the past of his father himself, who is hand-wrapped.

It is easy to get lost, but it is also easy and nice to look inside, overcome anger and decide to go home. Anything or place is the house. Shark teeth is a contemporary fairy tale that chooses to follow the path of tenderness, empathy and meaning. Even and especially when it is difficult. Like magic. Also beautiful is the representation of the male friendship in adolescence, veneered but sincere and instinctive.
