Based on Harry Grey’s novel The Hoods, the film, presented out of competition in Cannes, is the last chapter of the “time trilogy” after C’era once il West e Down La testa. The film did not have a great public success by cashing out what would now be 112 thousand euros, and $5 million in the US, but over time it was recognized a masterpiece. The plot of C’era once in America tells the story of David “Noodles” Aaronson in the 40-year-old aric from the 1920s to the 60s, from the Jewish ghetto, to the New York misfortune between prohibitionism and post prohibition. David met him in 1933 in full prohibition. Four assassins have to kill him and to find him first kill his partner Eve, then torture Fat Moe Gelly, owner of the bar he frequents, who directs them to a Chinese fumeria. Noodles escapes and gets to Buffalo.
In 1968 he returned to New York and found his old friend Moe. The memories make us return to the 1920s and his great love Deborah, when he was a boy, to the friendship with Max Bercovicz, to the gang that led him to collide with Bugsy. After the flashback, Noodles will be dealing with the past, between old ghosts and unresolved issues, among new criminal enterprises and the possibility to make peace with his story.
