“I learned not to wait for someone to tell me it’s my time. ”
To speak, in a podcast of the Hollywood Reporter, is Rhea Seehorn, who summed up in a sentence the mentality with which he approached every single role played, from the first characters on stage of a theatre to figures like Kim Wexler and Carol Sturka, who soon made her known to the general public.
A passion born also thanks to the parents, as he tells in the same interview, both skillful storytellers, who have led her to develop as a child an obsession for the story for images and in particular for the French cinema and for the television series of the past.
Even before starting his acting training, the young Rhea liked reinterpreting scenes and monologues in front of her sister. Only with the beginning of college, however, has approached the world of acting gradually in love and deciding to attend theater courses, while, in parallel, he continued his studies in visual arts and architecture. All’ora Seehorn admits to continuing to cultivate his studies in the field of art, a context that over the years has proved to be a fundamental help in understanding complex scenes. As stated: “I come from the visual arts. For me acting means removing, not adding, as you do with the sculptures. ”
In the early years on the set often interprets those that define as “Weird Friends” “ Strange Friends”, secondary characters, figures that conceal secrets or fight against their weaknesses. “I interpreted all those bizarre people, with great secrets or addictions, and they were fantastic parts: the idea was to become a better actress, somehow, every single day.”.
Rhea Seehorn’s career begins by interpreting non-central characters, but chosen to distance itself from the archetype of the “boyfriend”, instead favoring sarcastic female characters, with a pungent humor. Among the first major television roles is Cheri, the sister in I’m With Her, followed by Roxanne Harris in Whitney, a part arrived after almost ten years of projects often concluded prematurely. In this sitcom she plays a divorced and entertaining woman, who flanks the protagonist in an attempt to keep the spark alive in the sentimental relationship.
But it is in 2015 that Rhea Seehorn manages to distance himself from those second-floor roles and show his talent in Better Call Saul in the character of the lawyer Kim Wexler. In an interview for Variety the actress describes the role: “Kim was not meant to be loved. It was designed to be consistent. […] When a female character is really complex, it often makes it uncomfortable. ”
Kim Wexler is a figure that goes against traditional female television roles: acts without justification, prefers silence over words and rejects conflict. Bringing to light a work of strong subtraction, not only in movements but also on the emotional plane. “I was interested that the audience never knew where it was.” This constant “do not impose itself” has characterized the interpretation making it unforgettable. It is starting with Better Call Saul who begin to arrive the first nominations and critical recognition, marking a decisive turning point in his career.
In recent years, Seehorn has voiced several characters in animated series and starring roles in films such as Linoleum as Erin Edwin alongside Jim Gaffingan, or taking part in the latest Bad Boys franchise.
After ten years, Seehorn returned to work with Vince Giiligan in the Apple TV Pluribus series, where he played the lead role for the first time. It is Carol Sturka, a writer who lives in a seemingly peaceful and happy reality, but in which she, together with a few other people, perceives a fracture, finding herself in front of the dilemma whether to join that artificial harmony or preserve her identity. The actress this time finds herself having all the narrative responsibility on her shoulders, however maintaining her vision: “I didn’t want to prove anything. I wanted to support a story,” he said at a meeting with the press.
Seehorn says he accepted the role without reading the script “I trusted the vision.” A trust that Gilligan himself reciprocates, after discovering the talent of the actress decided to change the original structure of the series to suit her better. “The character was initially thought of as a male protagonist, but then, as I knew Rhea…I felt the need to push me a little further and create a series with a female protagonist. Who better than her? ”
It is thanks to Pluribus that finally comes institutional recognition, with the victory this year of the Golden Globe as the best actress in a dramatic series. But unlike what one might think the actress’ career was not a continuous race towards fame, as Seehorn himself said in an interview after the award: “This award does not change who I am. He just tells me the path was seen. ”
A recognition that the actress herself defines as a simple “point of alignment”, after years in which she patiently consolidated her artistic talent. More than a turn, it is the natural continuity of a method based on the absence of rush, confidence in time and growth. “Late success makes you more free, no more anxious” he said in the same interview.
