Things not said, the review: extreme passions and emotions in Muccino sauce

The cinema of Gabriele Muccino has a clear and easily recognizable figure, made of emotions, relationships, screams and characters in crisis with themselves and Things not said betrays this world of his. During the presentation, the director told him how the novel Syracuse by Delia Ephron was proposed by the production of Leone Film Group, who had long sought someone to adapt it. “I wrote it in 25 minutes, these characters correspond to my world it all went fast.”.

“Working with Gabriele Muccino leads to reasoning about himself because he tells us who we are moving the axes to the truth” was Stefano Accorsi’s comment that made explicit what we perceive when watching the film. The characters of Things not called as well as those of the other films of Muccino, are people who live extreme emotions and somehow trying to control them. Reality, always push a little further than the real. Every choice we make involves a consequence, every word said or not said has its own relapses on their own existence and others.

Le cose non dette, la trama

Carlo and Elisa, a well-established and brilliant couple, live in Rome between successes, habits and a love that, perhaps, is no longer that of once. He is a university professor and writer in creative crisis, she is a brilliant and respected journalist also abroad. In search of new stimuli, they leave for Morocco along with their friends of all time, Anna and Paolo, and their teenage daughter Victoria. Among the unresolved dynamics, secrets and looks that confuse the boundaries and question certainties acquired, the group finds itself to deal with what no one would ever want to face. And then comes Blu, a young philosophy student of Carlo, a mysterious presence that ignites questions and tensions. In a distant, warm and still landscape, relationships tend, turn, turn.

Because sometimes a tiny crack is enough to bring down everything that seemed stable. And because maybe we never really know who’s next to us.

Il cast

The film is directed by Gabriele Muccino and is taken from the novel “Siracusa” by Delia Ephron, author of the script together with the same Muccino. Next to the protagonists Stefano Accorsi, Miriam Leone, Claudio Santamaria and Carolina Crescentini, complete the cast Beatrice Savignani and Margherita Pantaleo.

The director of photography is Fabio Zamarion, the installation is by Claudio di Mauro. The scenography is curated by Massimiliano Sturiale and the costumes by Angelica Russo.

The soundtrack of the film and the original song “The Things Not Says”, interpreted and composed by Mahmood, are produced and directed by Paolo Buonvino.

Le cose che si possono dire

Much can be said about Things not said without expiring in the spoiler. The same Muccino told how the plot twist present within the film, is not much in his strings and not having reasoned for genres but having wanted to tell the drama of these characters. Carlo, Elisa, Anna and Paolo are four friends in their “advanced doors”. They are no longer the young tormented of the first films of Muccino, they are men and women who carry years of pain, suffering and above all silences.

Sometimes it is simple from the outside to think judging the lives of others and to think that it would be enough little, a sentence or an extra word would be enough to change everything. But when you find yourself inside, overwhelmed by emotions that go beyond words, it is never easy to have the right control over reactions. As far as we can see otherwise, we are animals who still have an instinctive component. We are vain, self-centered and selfish even those who illude not to be. We tell ourselves the world and life for what we want it to be, almost forgetting that our lives intercept those of others. Things not said shows us how sometimes a sentence would be enough to change the trajectories of life. But without it all would be linear, following lines already drawn.

There is tension, emotion and frenzy in full style by Gabriele Muccino. Of course Accorsi and Santamaria, with all the good you want, begin to show the signs of the age passing and the various characters are so forced to have an indefinite and indefinite age between the 55 and 40 years (Accorsi e Leone in reality are 14 years of difference), but surely it is not something catalogable as a defect. Tangier, with its narrow streets and chaos is a perfect obstacle to the spirit of its protagonists.
