Top Gun: Maverick, the nostalgia operation tonight on TV

Pete Maverick Mitchell is back. In fact, he never left the public imagination, a pilot in brown leather jacket par excellence for generations and generations of fans of cinema and pop culture. Top Gun (1986) finally has its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, after years of tribulations. A happy ending, all around the only and only absolute protagonist: Tom Cruise, and after Paramount+ and Sky Cinema back on Italy 1 Friday 6 March.

Top Gun: Maverick, perché sì e perché no – La Recensione

Maverick refuses to scale the navy hierarchy. In life, he just wants to be a pilot, exclusively on the field. It does not follow the rules, it does not accept restrictions and impositions. 34 years have passed and risked a million times to be dismissed with dishonour, but (thanks also to the help of the old rival Icebreaker) remained there, like a golem or as a statue of the island of Easter, inamovibile. After another challenge to authority he is sent to train the 12 best young drivers in the world for a suicide but fundamental mission. Among them, the son of his friend and colleague Goose, who died during a mission with him. At the military base bar an old acquaintance: the beautiful bartender Penny. The rest is written on its own.

Tom Cruise is tired, orange and sweaty. Tom Cruise does a lot of looks with the mouth a little open. Tom Cruise is the absolute protagonist of this movie that would like to be on other, but it is only on Tom Cruise. The dialogues are a bit postponent, written by an automatic generator of phrases made. The characters are criminally shallow. Abbott. Exchanges with Jennifer Connelly are strangely plastic and superficial. The mission to be accomplished is practically what was faced by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars – A new hope. There are no bad guys and those who are appetizer are for the pure taste of being. Something’s not right, something’s left behind. Everything goes exactly as you expected, in the most trivial and less new way possible.

E quindi?

Despite all these problems, Top Gun: Maverick is a tender and nostalgic film, which honors the first without daring too much but without ruining its memory. Entertainment and at times exciting, it is perfect for fans of the genre and for fans of airplanes. A film that respects who came before him. When we talk about sequel, unfortunately, it is not obvious. That’s why he deserves abundant sufficiency.
