House of Gucci is redesigned this evening Friday 6 March on Rai 2. 157 minutes of duration to tell the story of how the arrival of Patrizia Reggiani overwhelmed the famous Italian fashion house, inside which today there is no longer any member of the Gucci family. Ridley Scott after being fascinated by the story of the Getty family in All the money in the world, recounts another complex family story by cladding Hollywood paint a really happened story.
La trama di House of Gucci
House of Gucci is a history of ambition, greed, scandals but above all fashion. At the end of the 1970s a young Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) accidentally meets a Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) party and falls in love with him and his surname, succeeding in capturing with his charm the heir of a branch of the family.
At the time the heirs of Guccio Gucci Aldo (Al Pacino) and Rodolfo (Jeremy Irons) had divided the kingdom. Aldo was pointing to business from New York, Rodolfo preserved tradition. Maurizio, son of Rodolfo, appears detached from family dynamics. At least until the meeting with Patrizia who wanted to get out of his family “normality” thanks to the marriage with Gucci. So he convinced his husband to enter the company, bypassing his father and directing his uncle.
With the passing of time the manipulative soul of Patrizia, encounters the resistances of Maurizio, who conquered the company, also thanks to his wife, decides to move away from it. The meeting with Tom Ford (Reeve Carney) changes the Gucci brand but in the meantime Patrizia together with a psychic (Salma Hayek) plans his revenge and the murder of Maurizio. The rest is history.
House of Gucci 2 film in uno
House of Gucci are two movies in one. On the one hand there is the original film, on the other the doubled version. And maybe for once that dummy could correct the choices made by the original one. The film is in fact spoken in an absurd Italian-American, a caricature language that we probably Italians speak before the Americans when we try to dialogue with them in English.
The absurd is to imagine a film set in Italy, an Italian story, spoken in this way. Above all it is absurd to see all this and at the same time to hear the voices of the non-stars, the waiters, the various compasses in Italian. Practically Ridley Scott creates a patinate and illusory way, a sort of “italynia” or “italopoli” where characters speak an unexisting language.
The only result is to give life to a film that seems to be a caricature of Saturday Night Live, devoid of fluidity, in which often the characters talk to snaps struggling to replicate that language. Even the gestuality that wants to recalcate the Italian one, is fake, artifact. You don’t understand the sense of the operation. There would have been nothing sea in a film shot in English but with the center an Italian story.
The absurd is completed in a Milan reconstructed in Rome with a crucial scene set in the Roman Coppedè district (one and easily identifiable) but that in reality should be in Milan. Ridley at least could have gone on a less recognizable way… a superficiality worthy of the worst Hollywood. Unfortunately all these “technical” problems are not compensated at narrative level.
…per una soap opera di lusso
Of course, those who will see the dubbed film, in Italian as in any other language, will lose all this but will find themselves in front of an excessively long film for the room (just a little more to turn it into a miniseries), in which time is relative sometimes runs and sometimes slows down, in which the characters, especially Maurizio, evolve suddenly, to the point that the impression of sleeping during the vision could arise.
Even without the linguistic problem remains the doubt of the operation. What was the goal? Net of the charm of a tale of power, greed and luxury, of a creative family divided by the interests of a woman, from where the need arises to ennoble the films for the TV of Hallmark Channel with a cast of this kind? House of Gucci is a soap opera made film, among deceptions, chased twists, love stories and betrayals. In which Ridley Scott appears to want to tease the Italians, their way of being, their excesses, their spoken (sorry if I return). The film is more offensive than the many stereotypes on Italian recounted in other films or in other series. The character of Paul portrayed by a Jared Leto hyper-masked, is a stain too absurd to be real.
The vote can only be 5 because over two and a half hours of our life cannot be thrown like this, for a film thought for social memes.
