After the presentation Off competition at the Venice Film Festival of 2025, arrives on TV La valle dei sorrisi, on Sky Cinema and NOW streaming since 18 March, also available on demand. Particularly appreciated by critics, the film cashed just over 300 thousand euros and also had an international distribution through Shudder.
The valley of smiles is the third feature film by Paolo Strippoli, among the most interesting voices of the new generation of Italian genre cinema. After having noticed with the supernatural thriller Piove, Strippoli returns to explore the shadowy areas of the human soul with a disturbing tale set in a mountain isolated community, placing itself in the groove of the new Italian horror folk, where the perturbante is born from social dynamics, collective rituals and deep fears. Produced by Vision Distribution, Fandango and Nightswim with Spok in collaboration with Sky, the film is taken from the subject “The unhappy angel” winner of the 2019 Solinas Prize by Jacopo Del Giudice, Paolo Strippoli and Milo Tissone, who also sign the script.

Remis is a village hidden in an isolated valley between the mountains. Its inhabitants are all unusually happy. It seems the perfect destination for the new teacher of physical education, Sergio Rossetti, tormented by a mysterious past. Thanks to the meeting with Michela, the young owner of the country’s inn, the professor discovers that behind this apparent serenity, there is a disturbing ritual: one night a week, the inhabitants gather to embrace Matteo Corbin, a teenager capable of absorbing the pain of others. Sergio’s attempt to save the young man will awaken the darkest side of the one who all call the angel of Remis.
Il cast
The protagonist of the film is Michele Riondino, as Sergio Rossetti, a teacher who arrived in a remote alpine country to leave behind a difficult past. Around him a seemingly perfect community played by Paolo Pierobon, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Sergio Romano, Anna Bellato, Sandra Toffolatti and Roberto Citran, along with the young Giulio Feltri, here at his debut on the big screen.
