Is that the last line? and the ridiculous drama of growing together — The review

After A star is born and Maestro, Bradley Cooper comes back behind the camera with Is the last line? , a familiar dramedy written by Will Arnett (who also interprets the protagonist) and Mark Chappell and inspired by the experience of the latter with separation. The film is in the theatres since April 2 distributed by The Walt Disney Company Italia: but will it be the perfect film to get excited during the Easter weekend or the self-indulgent slaughter of two actors at the helm?

After twenty-six years, a house, two sons and two dogs, for Tess and Alex has now come to an end. Not because of a quarrel, treason or other traumatic event: simply time has pushed them away. The two are to balance the needs of the family that still have in common with space to be individuals found in single life. Tess then decided to get closer to her youthful passion of volleyball as a coach; Alex instead finds almost by chance a form of therapy in the sincerity of the open mic stand up comedy.
But distributing two lives that have been interwoven for a quarter of a century is not easy, and in finding themselves the two will begin to suspect that “we have to separate ourselves” may not be their last line..

I have to admit that this smaller size is very good for Bradley Cooper. Both A star is born and Maestro were magniloquent projects and a bit ‘sbroken, in which the split between a (co)protagonist role and the direction had probably deprived him of the critical distance to understand when to say (and say) no. With this third film, Abington’s actor retires to a secondary role as a lovable loser in which he is more charismatic and loving than usual, and also the direction has to gain, making a clear step in a more intimate and cared direction.

For the rest, Is it the last joke? is a movie that does (good) what is written on the packaging. For me, that I am quite susceptible to sentimentalism and I also grew up between two houses like the sons of Tess and Alex, I must admit that it was quite touching. Even inhabiting his body and not that of an anthropomorphic horse Will Arnett can give us a faceted interpretation of a man whose inner life is so trivial and complex (the two things are not in opposition, indeed), and Laura Dern is… well, is Laura Dern, what else do I have to tell you?
Is that the last line? It is a film that, without being heavy, manages to manage a not indifferent amount of complexity and emotional chiaroscuro that are a natural part of a shared life. Because the truth is that you never stop growing together, regardless of age.

Will Arnett is Alex Novak, a Neapolitan man who finds an unexpected form of therapy in the stand-up comedy; his wife Tess, a legend of the volleyball who retired to devote himself to the children and family, is instead interpreted by Laura Dern. Bradley Cooper and Andra Day play Balls and Christine, couple of Tess’s friends and Alex also at the grip of a long-term relationship. Amy Sedaris is Kemp, MC of Comedy Cellar, whose comedian cast includes Chloe Radcliffe, Jordan Jensen, Reggie Conquest and James Tom. Finally, in the cast also Ciaran Hinds and Christine Ebersole in the role of Alex’s parents.
