Alice & Steve, love and hate among old friends: the review of Disney+ English comedy

Alice & Steve is an English comedy in 6 episodes available from Monday, June 8 on Disney+. It should be enough to convince you to watch the TV series, you don’t need too many words in front of the English comedy, a review would simply end up repeating the obvious: the simplicity with which the English can use sarcasm, laughing and smiling about the most unlikely themes is absolutely enviable. It’s probably the only reason for wanting to be born there.

Alice & Steve, amici all’inglese

Alice and Steve are two old-time friends, those who do everything together, who are known and supported forever. Alice’s got a 26-year-old daughter, Izzy, back from a break with her boyfriend. Just in the night that Izzy stops at the mother’s house, Steve also stops sleeping on the couch. And that casual encounter will lead to the birth of such a sudden love as unexpected and leaving Alice speechless. Literally. From that moment his only mission will be to make their lives a hell because it is unthinkable to accept to lose the best friend and daughter at only one moment.

Risate non per tutti

Dramedy? Comedy-drama? or simply comedy? Personally I propose more for the definition of comedy but with a kind of laughter that is not for everyone, Alice & Steve makes that sarcastic smile, a little bad, laughs about excesses, defects, uncomposed reactions. There is no search for a joke, but at the same time there is no depth of so many fake comedy, which sometimes lightly have little. They are English, they have that taste for perfide sarcasm that smoothes, that irony that also inserts in the most intense dramas.

But Alice & Steve also knows how to be surprisingly tender and moving, showing the life of these dissatisfied 50-year-olds, perpetually eager to return to their youth, overwhelmed by a world that they no longer know and that they do not recognize (emblematic in this sense the evening with Izzy’s friends and all the things that can and cannot be said). But in the end it is important to remember that age is only a number and that is how you live that number to really make a difference.

What must love or friendship prevail? How far is it likely to go to love someone? How much love is that of Izzy and how much is a mixture of reassuring comfort and desire to challenge the maternal figure? Sometimes you don’t even realize how much a person, always and forever present in his life, represents a supporting column, which once removed causes everything else to collapse. Including Alice’s wedding with reassuring Daniel, a timorous music teacher who lives in the shadow of the exuberant wife.

Alice & Steve, perché è da vedere

If you are tired of a reassuring comedy, of stories based on always equal jokes, Alice & Steve does to your case, it will take you to a different world, far from the American one but also far from the Italian one. The laugh is so subjective and personal that it is rare to find two people laugh at the same things. If you’re in front of an English comedy or comedy, it’s even more.
