A year from Superman — who from non-lover of superhero movies I had appreciated more than expected — the new DC Universe of James Gunn gives us the film on Supergirl who promised us. The film is taken from the Supergirl comics miniseries: Tom King and Bilquis Evely, adapted by Ana Nogueira and directed by Craig Gillespie.
Can he double the success of the “noble cousin”? Let’s find out in the halls from today, June 25.
Supergirl: tutto per un (super)cane
Kara Zor-El, in the Supergirl century, could not be more different from her cousin Superman. He spends his time wandering around the galaxy in astrocamper with his dog Krypto, mostly engaged in a tour of the planets with red sun where his superpowers kryptonians do not work and can get drunk in holy peace. This at least until his way meets that of the space bandit Krem, which steals his ship and, above all, poisons his dog. In order to save Krypto Kara, he will embark on a rocambolistic pursuit at the four corners of the galaxy. To follow her, she will be Ruthye, a little girl on the trail of Krem to get revenge. Between spatial piracy, immortal bounty hunters and abandoned planets, Kara will come to terms with the past and decide what she wants from her future.

I always try to get into the room knowing as little as possible: I do not look at the trailers, I do not read the materials, avoided as the plague news and interviews. I like being a rasa tabula. Sitting at Supergirl, my idea was that of a Superman-like film: urban and a bit like. What I found in front of me is instead a space adventure caciarona and with veins of revenge story a little samurai. Particularly enjoyable is the setting: that of Supergirl is a prosaic galaxy, made of spaceships and pirates but also and especially of galactic buses, service stations, snacks and people who try to camp.
It also works the expedient of the color of the sun in the different planets: if it is red Kara is a tough but basically normal girl, while the light of a yellow sun active in her all the superpowers that we are accustomed to associate with the steel man. This allows you to alternate with moments of pure power fantasy in which Kara attacks every enemy to action scenes where the stake is real and high voltage.
Pesi e misure
As previously mentioned, Superman was a film that, even in being pure genre cinema, betrayed a clear moral and intellectual position on a series of themes, from the need for hope to what it means to do the right thing. Supergirl is not like this: it is a film with a minimal plot, which tells a simple story in an effective and unspecified manner. But that for years and years has been the asticella we used to measure genre cinema: we do not approach the first Ghostbusters or Big Trouble in Chinatown waiting for a moral position or who knows what dramatic finesse, and maybe we should not do it even with Supergirl. The important thing is to know who we are and what we want from the movie we have in front.
