Triangle of sadness: only for strong stomaces – The film review difficult to digest

They’ll talk to you about comedy. Don’t believe it. Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, Triangle of Sadness, written and directed by Ruben Östlund, returns to Heaven on July 17th, after being premiered at the Film Festival in Rome and after winning the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Get ready for a punch in the guts.

Triangle of Sadness is the second film by Östlund to conquer the Golden Palm after The Square, and is his first English-language film; it is a film that crosses the empty and superficial world of male models, a journey into the meanders of the human squaler. It was produced by Plattform, Essential Films, Coproduction Office, SVT, ZDF, Arte France Cinéma and distributed by Teodora Film.

Triangle of Sadness e il mondo vuoto dei modelli maschili

The beginning gives a tone to the whole (long) film. A focus on the empty and superficial world of male models, with a zoom on Carl, unfortunate model that begins to be too old for his work and who suffers a lot because his girlfriend has more success than him. The two are constantly discussing. Stacco scene. We’re on a millionaire cruise ship, real rich people. Carla and Yaya (this is the name of her fiancée) were invited for free, as influencers. Around them, a real zoo of characters. There are the sweet old ones with the anti-personnel mine factory, the capitalist Russians enriched in a losca and much more.

A series of catastrophic events fell on the ship. First an overwhelming wave (literally) of malaise due to the sea moved during the captain’s dinner. Then a pirate attack. The ship sinks, the survivors find themselves on a deserted island. Every social norm that protects them bends under the need for survival, on a journey into the meanders of the human squalor.

L’umanità animalesca e la sfera dello stomaco

If it is a politically charged documentary about the exploitation of the lower social classes you are looking for, Triangle of Sadness is not the film for you. The film starts from an impietous and grotesque roundabout (not fun, grotesque) on the rich, the real rich, the rich, the rich, the rich for beauty, and throws them piece by piece, giving us on a silver plate a series of reasons why they are disgusting and infuriating. Including the claims they believe they can have on any human being is economically and socially worse than them. All right. Then, however, his gaze expands. Investigate strength from other points of view, last but not least gender and sexual.

When the balances explode, and Abigail (the staff’s head of the ship’s cleansing, the non-whites who work in the lower levels and are seen as the least possible by the guests) becomes the most powerful naufraga (because it is the only one who knows how to fish and cook the fish while the others look at it, assuming that it will still be a subjected face because they are rich) the terrible dynamic of power that existed on the ship is reproduced faith. This gives rise to no few questions (at least, should) in the viewer.

Is that the society that makes us monsters? Is it somehow justifiable and understandable to want power at the cost of everything, after a life of abuse? Abigail is a victim or simply a horrible person who has finally been able to express his cruelty fully? Is it both? The last scene is a very strong and animal condensation of all this.

As at this point you will well understand, Triangle of Sadness is a dense film, which does not explain. A film for strong stomaces, in every sense. An exaggerated, exuberant film, sometimes monstrous and degenerate. This slumpy, exaggerated mode, becera to represent complex human dynamics makes it perhaps more obvious, but it also risks moving them away. The laughter filter could make it seem unrealistic, to overlay and confuse between them exaggeration of comedy mold with intrusimilarity and unrealism.

On this point we must be clear: Triangle of Sadness is a film that tells real issues and puts us above the exaggeration filter, pressing the accelerator pedal to the bottom. It is no coincidence that it focuses on the sphere of the stomach, which brings with it a whole series of images, meanings. It is the sphere of inordigy, digestion (or indigestion), transformation, throat, the most material and animal material there is. It’s a lot, sequence.
