It is always reassuring (perhaps) to know that there are superheroes that protect Planet Earth. All the more if these are DC Comics Green Lanterns.
On HBO Max from 17 August there is Lanterns, the travagliatissima new series of DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, composed of eight episodes and created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. starring Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan.
We have seen the first episode preview and so we can not make a review if not partial, because much will depend on what will come. Below is our comment no spoiler.
Lanterns: com’è il primo episodio? No spoiler
First it had to be a film, then a series, then entered the new DC Studios course on TV and cinema by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Lanterns in the first episode presents itself as a buddy series between police and supernatural, with a single horizontal case that embraces three historical epochs (1996-2016-2026) and two intergalactic vigilants that should not co-exist. Yet Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is forming the recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), so that one day he can wear with competence and pride the ring of the Order of Lanterns.
There is therefore the speech of inheritance and the passage of generational witness and there are the apparently opposite characters of the two protagonists. The legend, loved by everyone, who knows how to become “creative” when it comes to the Law, but still remains faithful to his oath. There is the recruit, daughter of a marine and for this ligy to the rules always, with so much desire to do and spirit of observation but that you do not feel taken seriously.
In the background of fil rouge there is a dark earth mystery and an investigation into a murder in the heart of the United States, precisely in the South of the USA, with so much cadence and southern customs (the rifles always available on the porches, exaggeration in the ways and approaches, the importance of traditions).
Finally there is a cast of faces known for fans of seriality such as Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, and the former Castle Nathan Fillion – already Green Lantern in Gunn Superman’s film. Precisely for these reasons he reminded us of a True Detective in supernatural sauce, or at least aspires to be. We will see if these premises/promises will be maintained and will prove a good or a counterproductive evil.
