Pecore undercover: mystery to the whole wool – The review

Kyle Balda made his bones as a director in the animation world: it is not surprising that it was the choice to direct Pecore undercover, a mystery halfway between animation and live action. The film, written by Craig Mazin on the basis of Leonie Swann’s novel, released in Italian theatres on May 7 for Sony Pictures Italy.

Pecore sotto copertura: detective inusuali

George Hardy is an English pastor who lives a small but perfect life. Every day he takes care of his sheep, and in the evening he entertains them by reading them a chapter from a yellow book. This factual existence is however upset when George is found murdered and the flock promised to a new pastor with a more…carnivorous approach to breeding. Strong investigative skills learned with so many literary mysteries, George’s sheep will have to go undercover to help the misdeals village cops find out who killed their pastor.

Un mystery ovino

Beyond its unusually languished protagonists, Pecore undercover respects all the canons of the genus mystery, from the group of suspects (each with secrets and reasons to want George out of the games) to a stranger just arrived in the city who takes charge of solving the case. The interpretations work almost all — nice the Nicholas (Galitzine and Brown), good Hong Chau and always explosive Emma Thompson.

Qualche risata, qualche lezione

Of course, the nature for families of the film, which in addition to a mystery to be solved and a discreet fun manages to give the viewers some pearl of wisdom that, in addition to touching the little ones, risks to arouse some emotion in those of us who are a little further with the years.
Ultimately, as long as you’re looking for a family movie, Pecore undercover is able to have fun while also leaving some emotion: a good movie for a busy weekend in this little spring May.

The cast

Hugh Jackman is George Hardy, a pastor who deeply loves his flock. Nicholas Brown is Tim Derry, a misdemeanor village cop, while Nicholas Galitzine is Elliott Matthews, a witty city reporter who decides to help Tim in his investigation. Molly Gordon is Rebecca Hampstead, George’s lost daughter just arrived in town, while Hong Chau, Tosin Cole, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Conleth Hill are fellow citizens, each with a secret and a reason to get rid of George. Also noteworthy is the “gregge” of the doubling, which sees Lily, the most awake sheep, voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the mysterious Sebastian interpreted by Bryan Cranston. Chris O’Dowd is patient Mopple, Bella Ramsey is the curious Zora, Regina Hall is the beautiful Nuvola and Patrick Stewart is Sir Ritchfield, the oldest of the flock. In the film, Emma Thompson also played a rash attack.
