Silent night, a bad movie. Just – The review

Christmas movies are all the same. There is Santa Claus that manifests itself in various forms, stories of families that meet and meet, loves and children. Have you ever thought of a Christmas movie where the holy day to go to the table with relatives to eat or to pray and exchange gifts is that of revenge? To this question that perhaps no one had placed answers Silent Night, film directed by John Woo. Your feature? Don’t have dialogue. That’s right. The protagonist takes a bullet to his throat, and from there on he does not breathe. Not on the screen, at least. Silent Night is on Rai 4 on May 10, 2026.

Silent night, trama basic

There is a man chasing a gang. He will never get the best, and in fact he is left on asphalt in the end of life. When he wakes up and, after a long therapy, he resigns, we discover the truth: on Christmas morning a wandering bullet (result of a slap between gangs of the neighborhood) killed his son, and he was almost killed in an attempt of rash revenge. Still mourning, he decides to kill the guilty on Christmas night of the following year. To do so, he prepares for months: he trains, informs himself and enters the criminal backgrounds to carry out with every means his silent revenge towards those who ripped his son.

E una esecuzione eccentrica

The story, more or less, holds. That’s enough to justify all the shooting and fighting scenes. The problem is, it’s all too much. There’s an action that doesn’t take you seriously and knows you’re exaggerating on John Wick’s model. The problem is that there is nothing here to help and break the monotony of pew pew. There is no irony, there are no dialogues, apart from a couple of good intuitions and extremist chamber movements there are no beautiful things to look at, only a man removed from mourning that instead of going to therapy trains and meditates the total destruction of gangs. What should we hold on to?

Silent night, il problema dei personaggi (soprattutto femminili)

Another problematic thing about Silent Night is that the main character, the desperate father, has only one trait of personality: blind rage. It’s not funny, it’s not funny, you don’t even allow yourself to suffer normally. Back away, he’s got collapses probably due to post-traumatic stress, but he’s going on low, completely unable to do anything else. The wife (who, remember, lost a son exactly as he does) tries to make it, separates from him to survive. And yet, we don’t even see anything about her, which is used as a gangster to make us understand how he is. We face a pathetic and unprepared man, driven by madness and flashbacks, and we can do nothing but look at him. For two hours, it’s a little too much.

Il cast

Joel Kinnaman is the protagonist, mourning father who only wants revenge and doesn’t care what he has to sacrifice to get it. Catalina Sandino Moreno is his mute and useless wife, a potentially promising character left on the margins. Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) is the police commissioner, also useless. In the cast also Harold Torres.

Silent Night in streaming

The film is on Superfresh Amazon Channel, on RaiPlay live stream and rental and/or purchase on Rakuten TV, Apple TV Store, Timvision, Amazon Video.
