A Colpo di Fortuna in Paris and the confirmation of a Woody Allen unreliable master, tonight on TV

There is no luck but only talent and skill in Coupe de Chance – A Colpo di Fortuna, return to Paris by Woody Allen. Vittorio Storaro’s precious photography, which has been characterizing his cinema for years, transforms Paris into a main character in history and helps us to frame the story by going beyond the surface. Apparently, we’re from the classic Woody Allen comedy. In fact, however, the personal dynamics of his characters soon assume the contours of a bourgeois thriller with a vintage taste.

Far from the roaring special effects, from the need to hold the viewer hostage for hours inside a cinema, Woody Allen continues in its rapid and fast frescoes of humanity, succeeding in always intercepting the taste of the period he tells, of the city he represents. A hit of luck shot in any other city would have been a different movie. Bringing to Paris is the perfect intersection between the bohemian aspirations of a writer with in hand the manuscript of life and the broken dreams of a rich bourgeois who has adapted to life in luxury.

Fanny has everything. Jean fills her with attentions and gifts even though she still has not quite understood what work she does and how she can be so rich. But it is that wealth that in a city full of opportunities like Paris, in which to stand is part of the existence itself, you do not doubt simply accept it. She works in an auction house, is surrounded by beauty and luxury. But it is there, in the placidity of the instant that fits the case. That case you didn’t think you wanted but that ends up overwhelming your life.

Along the streets of Paris, a city of love and opportunity, crosses Alain. Wrong writer, who seems to live a life that does not belong to him. An old friend of the school who recognizes her and confesses to having always been in love with her. Inadmissible object of adolescence. That’s enough to change Fanny’s life to make her dream of a different life than she has, triggering a chain of events at times unexpected.

Woody Allen plays with the case and words. It treats perfectly identifiable characters but not for this stereotypical. It adds small characteristics capable of representing a world (such as Jean’s passion for trainees). Just observe every single movement of the characters to understand that we are in front of an author who can write, direct, tell. And that we will miss it terribly when the fate decides to remove it.

Woody Allen’s fiftieth film arrives on Friday, May 15 on Rai 3, set in Paris and filmed for the first time in French. A romantic thriller starring Lou De Laâge, Niels Schneider, Valérie Lemercier and Melvil Poupaud.
