The plot of The Shadow of Caravaggio brings us back to Italy in 1600, the years when the great painter lived. Michelangelo Merisi is a brilliant and rebellious artist in relation to the rules dictated by the Council of Trent which traced the exact coordinates in the representation of sacred art. After learning that Caravaggio used in his paintings sacred prostitutes, thieves and wanderers, Pope Paul V decides to commission a Vatican secret agent a real investigation, to decide whether to grant the grace that the painter asked after the sentence of death for killing a rival in love in duel.
Thus the Shadow, this the name of the investigator, begins its investigation and intelligence activities to investigate the painter who – with his life and with his art – fascinates, upsets, subverts. A shadow that will have in his hands absolute power, life or death, on the fate of a genius.

Written, directed and interpreted by Michele Placido, at his fourteenth film as director, the film tells the artist, already famous in his time, in his deep contradictions and in the darkness of his impenetrable torment.
