Prey, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison, is the fifth film of Predator’s saga and is a sequel to the entire franchise. The first idea for the film was developed in 2018, during the production of The Predator. The idea was to create a sort of origin story for the antagonist, explaining how and when he arrived on earth the first time. It is produced by 20th Century Studios.
Being set about 300 years ago in a Comanche tribe, Prey assumed a careful study of the Indian tribes of America. Its authenticity and respect for indigenous peoples is also guaranteed by the cast of many native actors and the First Nation. Also one of the producers, Jhane Myers, is native. Prey is available on Disney+ from 5 August 2022 and Sunday 30 August 2026 is on Rai 4.

Comanche, 300 years ago. Naru is young, beautiful and stubborn. He would like with all his forces to hunt and defend his people from external threats, but his being born woman makes them all extremely difficult. Not only. One day, during one of his many pilgrimages, he realizes that something is wrong. When he insists on participating in the hunt for a lion, his suspicions will be found. Let’s get rid of the obvious things right now. Prey is a movie made for people who love this kind of film. So much blood, lots of fighting, lots of dead animals. It is the perfect prequel: it does not explain anything at all. He doesn’t need any conventions. The plot is almost non-existent. It’s a story of resistance and blood. Did we say blood? Enjoy, if you don’t think too much.
Even more, though, Prey is a hunting film. What it means to be a hunter and prey. In Prey all are hunters and prey, depending on the moments. The tribe’s boys are hunters, but they are prey of the lion before and the French colonizers then. French colonizers who in turn become prey of the Predator, who suffered a somewhat prehistoric re-styling, in line with the ambientation. He clearly fits into natural dynamics and becomes the predator par excellence, at the top of the pyramid. From his point of view, everyone is prey.
Naru, our tenacious protagonist, is the Preda with the capital P. She is a woman, her brother’s friends don’t even listen to her, her mother shakes her head and advises her to look for medicinal herbs. His way of hunting is different from that of men. More tactical, more based on his observations. The brute force is not the answer, for her, physically weaker. The Predator does not even consider her a threat, so she will let her live again and again. It will be his fatal error, what will turn him into a prey.
