On Sunday, September 13th, the classic film Braveheart – Previde Heart of 1995 directed and interpreted by Mel Gibson, a fictional version of the true story of the Scottish leader William Wallace. The film’s budget was 72 million dollars but it earned 210 million worldwide, also winning 3 BAFTAs (English Awards) for photography, costume and sound, 1 Golden Globe for direction and 5 Oscars including also best film and direction.
Braveheart la trama del film
The plot of Braveheart brought us back in the 13th century when Edward I, King of England, sits on the throne of Scotland. William Wallace whose family was massacred by the British when he was a child grew up becoming a man cultured but still linked to the traditions of his land. When his wife Murron is killed by British soldiers, William Wallace begins a revolt that soon turns into a struggle for Scotland’s independence.

Furono usati 3000 militari dell’esercito irlandese che a giorni alterni cambiavano schieramenti così che entrambe le parti nelle riprese sembravano più numerosi, ampliati poi in post produzione
Vennero usate oltre 10 mila frecce
Mel Gibson pensava di essere troppo vecchio per il ruolo ma Paramount non ha ceduto minacciando di togliere i finanziamenti; in effetti il personaggio che interpreta William Wallace all’epoca dei fatti raccontati avrebbe dovuto avere vent’anni mentre Gibson era già sui 40.
L’uso del kilt è una licenza artistica ma anche una forte inesattezza storica: infatti il kilt arriva solo nel 1700 mentre Braveheart è ambientato a metà 1200. Così come la coloritura del volto che ha reso il film iconico, era usata dai guerrieri britanni per investirsi di coraggio ma non venne più usata dalla fine dell’Impero romano.

Diverse le inesattezze storiche come il fatto che nella battaglia di Stirling Bridge la cavalleria inglese precipitò dal ponte crollato per il troppo peso e non sopraffatta dai nemici. La moglie di Wallace si chiamava Marian ma nel film viene cambiata in Murron.
