Tom Hanks is a good person with a good driver’s license who only have good people or, at least, this is the impression that the actor himself has given over the years (and are many) of his long and prolific career. That’s why seeing him in the role of the protagonist of Not so close is so funny and partly strange. The film is on Rai 1 Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
Not so close (A Man Called Otto) is taken from the comedian and moving bestseller “The man who put the world in order”, written by Swedish author Fredrik Backman, from which a very successful film was taken in Sweden in 2015. It is at this time that Marc Forster (director) and David Magee (screenwriter) decided to make the American version. A beautiful story, which leaves a good taste in the mouth and some tears in the eyes.

Otto Anderson, the protagonist of Not so close, is a dull, rude man, who thinks everyone is idiots except him, I fight the rules. Every morning he wakes up early and takes a ride in his neighborhood, on the residential outskirts of Pittsburgh. Check that everything is in order and fights with the neighbors who do not do things in the right way: that is, as he would like. As we follow him in his usual routine, we discover that he just retired, who lost his beloved wife and who wants to take his life. That’s right, Otto did everything he had to do and now he doesn’t want to exist anymore. He is stopped in his intent by a young couple with children moving, renting, in the cottage in front of his.
As the film advances new characters arrive on stage. Through flashbacks, we find out more about Otto’s wife, Sonya. On what they did together, on what they had promised, on what they suffered. We discover around Otto a community of neighbors, friends, people who love him. In this community, Tommy and Marisol, the new couple, fits perfectly. Otto is resistant to change and determined to end it, but in the meantime he has something to solve, especially for his community.
Tenero, well played, well shot. Not so close it gently creeps near you while you don’t mind and grows next to you, very warm and sweet. A film about the importance of the community, about not letting itself go to mourning, about the good that human beings can do to each other, just a pinch of kindness and empathy. Balsamic, moving, funny in a somewhat icy way (but adorable). It is impossible not to get attached to his characters and not to tifa for them. There is also a cat! What you want more.
