The second seasons (such as the second albums, cit.) are always the most difficult, because there is no new effect, they have to consolidate how built, develop new stories and try to open to new seasons. In short, the risk of wronging them is high. Fortunately, however, there are also exceptions, as in the case of MobLand. After the first previews, we can assure you that the second season of MobLand will not disappoint expectations. In fact, the TV series that starts on September 18 on Paramount+, produced by Guy Ritchie (also director of some episodes) improves compared to the first season.
Tom Hardy is perfect as the Harrigan Harry Da Souza fixer. The calm with which he faces every situation, the relentless gaze of those who are already thinking the next moves, the few but always decisive words, are characteristics of an overwhelming character. With one hand, it cuddles you and the other one slaps you without even knowing it. A perfect counterweight to the instability surrounding it. Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren are the leaders of a criminal family who tries to maintain their power while around the police and rivals try to exploit their divisions. All the characters grow up in this second season from Eddie to Gina Harry’s daughter, until she arrives at the always good Joanne Foggart who conquers a different space with her Jan.
But MobLand is perfect because he can tell the life of these criminals, beyond their most terrible actions and shooting scenes. The men and women of MobLand show themselves to 360 degrees, we see the fragility and moments of doubt, they are people as well as characters succeeding in emerging as compared to the most characteristic side. Of course, however, MobLand is and remains a thriller full of action, strong scenes and unexpected surprises. The novelty of the season, Johnny Flynn, is perfect in the role of the young gangster who arrives in scooter, away from the stereotypes of the sleek criminals with the Moroccans but has that psychopathic look that scares.
Introduced already in the previous season, the characters of Janet McTeer and Toby Jones are ready to give great satisfactions, the boundless and rampant power of Kat McAllister is able to shake the wrists (at least internally) even to our Harry who well knows how difficult it is to contain those who have money, power and political hooks. And the divisions within the family are the ideal grimaldello to exploit to try to destroy them, despite Harry.
MobLand is designed by Ronan Bennett and written along with Jez Butterworth, produced by Guy Ritchie who is also a producer as well as director of some bets and who shaped the general, hectic, ruthless and spectacular style. Although comparing TV series is always wrong, it is inevitable to do so with The Gentlemen: both are tied to Guy Ritchie, they are English, they are back with a second season a short distance from each other, they treat the world of gangsters.
But The Gentlemen is more patinated, bright, pop, like the platform that hosts it (Netflix), must please and know how to do it, should not trouble too much and must try to be as clear as possible. MobLand is more elegant and at the same time more rough, darker, more complex, capable of daring and spying, but at the same time takes more time to deepen not feeling the need to fill the spaces with underarms that are lost. Curiously both already know they have been renewed for a third season, who knows what direction they will take!
