The memory that flows, the identity that changes and a new life to learn about are at the center of Familiar Touch, the film written and directed by Sarah Friedland that Rai 3 proposes Friday 25 September at 21.20, on the occasion of the World Day of Alzheimer.
The film, produced in the United States in 2024, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won three awards: the Lion of the Future – Premio Venezia Opera Prima Luigi De Laurentiis, the prize for the best direction in the Orizzonti section and the one for the best female interpretation in Kathleen Chalfant. International criticism has also welcomed the film, at Rotten Tomatoes it currently reaches 99% positive reviews of 70 ratings, while on Metacritic has a Metascore of 89 out of 100, based on 24 reviews.
The film had an international route especially in festivals, after the presentation in Venice. In addition to the three awards won at the Lido, he won other awards in the independent circuit. Familiar Touch, la trama
The protagonist is Ruth Goldman, a woman of about eighty years who lives the first effects of dementia. One day she prepares for an appointment and leaves home convinced to go to a hotel. It is actually accompanied in a structure for the elderly in which he chose to move.
For Ruth that place is initially foreign. People, environments and habits of the structure become part of a reality that struggles to recognize, while its perception of time, age and relationships with others continues to change.
The film follows the woman’s everyday life from her point of view, without focusing only on memory loss. Ruth retains desires, gestures, habits and her own perception, even when the relationship with the past becomes increasingly uncertain.

To play Ruth is Kathleen Chalfant, flanked by Carolyn Michelle, Andy McQueen and H. Jon Benjamin. Sarah Friedland’s director and screenplay debuted in the fiction feature film. Friedland has built the film even from his experience as an assistant to older people with memory problems. The filming was carried out in collaboration with residents and staff of a community for the elderly of California, also involved in cast and crew.
