Mary Bennet was never the sister in the middle of the story. In Orgoglio and prejudice remained in the background, next to Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia and Kitty. The Other Bennet Sister – Orgoglio e riscatto (the subtitle is precisely made to make the connection to the novel understand) starts from this character to tell a story that Jane Austen had never put in the center of his novel.
The series comes from Saturday 26 September exclusively on Sky and streamed on NOW, with two bets each week. The first season consists of 10 bets and is created by Sarah Quintrell and Maddie Dai. The production is by Bad Wolf for BBC One and is taken from the novel The other sister Bennet by Janice Hadlow, published in Italy by Piemme. In the United Kingdom the series was a success with the first episode that got 7.3 million viewers in 28 days, BBC also stated that the series led to an increase of visitors to Bath where Jane Austen lived. The Other Bennet Sister came out last March in England and at Christmas is expected a special in 3 episodes.
La trama
The story begins in Longbourn, the home of the Bennet family. The five sisters must face the expectations of Regency society, where marriage and social position are still a fundamental part of the fate of a young woman.
Mary, interpreted by Ella Bruccoleri, occupies a particular position within the family. She’s the half-sister, less courted and less secure than Jane and Elizabeth. The series follows the moment when it begins to question the role others have imagined for her.
Mary’s path takes her away from the family home. From the soirées of the London high society to the hills of the Lake District, the protagonist crosses very different environments while seeking greater independence and a new self-awareness. The journey also becomes an opportunity to understand that his future must not necessarily coincide with what the family and society have established for her. In the series the world of Orgoglio and prejudice remains recognizable, but the story is observed through a woman who in the original novel did not have the space given to the older sisters. The series thus introduces a rereading of Jane Austen’s material without turning Mary into a simple secondary character of an already known story.

Il cast
Ella Bruccoleri plays Mary Bennet and guides a cast in which different characters of the Austen family and universe find space. Ruth Jones plays Mrs Bennet, mother of the five sisters, while Richard E. Grant dresses up as Mr Bennet. Richard Coyle and Indira Varma are Mr and Mrs Gardiner.
In Mary’s path, Dónal Finn, as Mr Hayward, a friend of the Gardiners who meets the protagonist when he works as a ruler, and Laurie Davidson, who plays Mr Ryder, one of his suitors.
