Below, on Netflix the TV series with Josh Hartnett and Charlie Heaton

It arrives on Netflix Thursday, October 8 Below, miniseries thriller with a small fishing community in Terranova is shocked by the appearance of a mysterious marine creature. Josh Hartnett, flanked by Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton are the protagonists of the six episodes of the miniseries designed by Jesse McKeown. The series combines thriller, horror and family drama, using the ambition of Newfoundland to also tell the relationship between a community, its territory and a way of living increasingly difficult to preserve.

For Jesse McKeown, ambientation is not simply a background, he explained that he had a personal connection with Terranova and that he wanted to build a story that could exploit the particular combination of isolation, spectacular landscapes and community sense. The interpreters also worked closely with the local community to get into the way of speaking and cultural features of the region. Hartnett, in particular, told that he also prepared a local radio dedicated to fishermen, while Charlie Heaton attended some locals in the area to familiarize himself with accent and environment.

Below, la trama

Calvin Penney, a fisherman of the small community of Snook’s Arm, is at the heart of the story. Calvin is a man tied to his family and the place where he lives, but bears with him the weight of the mysterious death of his father, which took place many years before. The situation changes when an unidentified marine creature begins to terrorize the town. What might initially seem like an inexplicable phenomenon quickly turns into a concrete threat to the inhabitants.

Calvin decides to protect his family and community, especially his son Wade, and to face what is emerging from the waters he trains with Fonda Howander, a marine researcher who arrived in the area. Together they try to understand what is really hidden under the surface of the ocean and what bond exists between the creature, the local legends and some secrets buried for generations.

The series is not limited to the monstrous component. The mystery becomes the starting point for a story that puts in the family center, community and change, with a town forced to confront a danger that comes from the sea just while its traditional lifestyle is already in difficulty.

Below e il tema del cambiamento climatico

Under the history of the marine creature there is also a more current theme. The series recounts a fishing community struggling with the progressive difficulty of maintaining its lifestyle. Calvin, for example, is forced to collect ice from icebergs due to the decrease in fish resources. This element introduces in history the theme of environmental changes and consequences that can have on communities that depend directly on the sea.

The environmental theme, however, is not presented separately by the thriller: the community crisis, the changing environment and the appearance of the creature are part of the same story.
