tn these days you will read hundreds of reviews, opinions and comments on The Devil Veste Prada 2. Twenty years after the first film – which marked an entire generation – the sequel arrives in the theatres today 29 April, with world embargo until 09.00, to avoid spoilers and revelations that could ruin the surprise to spectators. A surprise that, let’s face it, concerns more than other outfits, quotes from future memes, sketch memorable and little more, because I imagine – and hope – that no one expects who knows what masterpiece.
The Devil Veste Prada 2 should be seen and interpreted for what it is, in its essence: the sequel of an iconic film (when he has stewed this word?) set in 2026, with everything that twenty years lead to in fact of language, media, means of communication and style of narration.
I wrote two books on New York, and partly thanks to the 2006 film, which I often compared for themes, location and mood to some TV series featured in my New York travel guides (Younger, Ugly Betty, The Bold Type for example). The Devil Veste Prada is an anthem to the city, to the thousand possibilities it offers, to the obstacles that it sets along the way, to the beauty that sometimes solves everything, or almost.
Miranda, Andy, Nigel and Emily come back with a few more years on their shoulders but the same irony and the same style of many years ago.
As a fan it was a good shot at the heart to see the film begin during the preview: a shiver along the back, so much curiosity, infinite affection for the characters and their stories. New York, Milan, Lake Como: views, outfits, combing, frames. All right…All perfect for an Instagram story and a cover photo. Very harmonious, perfect to lend itself to screenshots with phrases to publish, look to imitate, jokes to repeat and with which to replace – it would now be – the famous “it is all”.
Don’t misunderstand me: as a fan, only with my heart, I think I would give 7 to this movie. But I am called to be critical, sincere, honest, and I prefer to be at the bottom, with the risk of dissatisfaction many or go countercurrent.
The story itself, the script, the final plot twist, some stereotypes on Italy: more than The Devil Veste Prada, looks like an episode of Emily in Paris. The film never takes off, does not go up to reach a peak – emotional or narrative – and then descend or end. It is linear, undoubtedly consistent with the first film, but standard, almost elementary in its execution. It is not a necessary sequel, but it is a sequel perfectly consistent with the age in which we live: more aesthetic than substance.
A great marketing project, it doesn’t rain on it.
A beautiful gift for fans of the first hour, no doubt.

But if I have to evaluate the film, more than enough I can not give: the predictability of some events, the banality of certain narrative choices are really too relevant to be ignored. Some narrative hymns are understood in advance, as if the film was afraid to betray the viewer rather than surprise him. Superb the cast, ça va sans dire, but little more.
So welcome back to Runway. Maybe.
