Avery Graves lives a double life: for the world she is a career woman always traveling, married and in love with the galant David. In fact, Avery is a CIA super-agent, shipped around the world to recover the most protected intelligence to put behind traffickers, terrorists and high-profile criminals. His loyalty to the agency and the United States is inamovable… or so it seems. When a mysterious criminal kidnaps David and threatens to kill him if Avery doesn’t give him a top-secret file called Canary Black, the woman is forced to work against her colleagues and, perhaps, risk the world..

Canary Black is a pretty good action film that does everything an action film should do: we have chases, shootings, infiltrations, double games and even a giant drone. The plot is trivial, but a good half of the titles in the genre the protagonist must recover a dangerous macguffin to save the world: nothing new under the sun. Why, then, looking at Canary Black gives the impression of being a fundamentally empty exercise?

What is missing in this film is something: a distinctive feature that makes it recognizable and distinct from others. What has launched Morel’s career has been the ability to put together action productions intrigued with an atmosphere and a feeling totally on the genres, from Banlieu 13 to Taken (who gave the same name franchise) up to the From Paris with Love stains. It will be Amazon’s rush or heavy hand, but at this turn the French director cannot find his thing, leaving us with an action film not unpleasant but that fails to stand out in the pile of releases this October.

Kate Beckinsale is CIA super-agent Avery Graves, while Rupert Friend plays her husband David, an English medical expert in the dark of her life of action. Ray Stevenson is Avery Jarvis Hedlund’s mentor and friend, while Ben Miles is the deputy director of the CIA, who flies to Zagreb to catch Avery. In the cast also Goran Kostić and Saffron Burrows.
