The film tells the story of Benjamin Martin, an agriculturist and ex-Vetran who after the end of the war between French and Indians decides to hang weapons to the nail to take care of his family. The film is set in South Carolina, the United States, during the years of the American War of Independence. Benjamin has a family of seven children, and leads a small plot of land. His life is quiet, until the day the news arrives that he could return to war again.
Benjamin will oppose with all his strength, trying to convince his fellow citizens, but then he will be forced to go. His son Gabriel, who had already enlisted in the army, was captured by English Colonel William Tavington, so he will have to save him, before he kills him, as he had done with Thomas, another son of Benjamin.
So Benjamin will leave with a group of volunteers to be part of the American front. Colonel Tavington tries to stop him by threatening his family, burning his house, and then the town church. During the fire his wife Anne lost her life, so Benjamin, blinded by anger, will try to avenge at all costs the death of his family.
