There are stories that work precisely because they speak of an impossible bond to break, as in the case of Lassie returns home, a new film adaptation of the famous novel by Eric Knight, from 1940 Lassie Come-Home which once again brings on the screen the relationship between a child and his inseparable dog one of the most known stories dedicated to the relationship between children and animals.
The 2020 film, directed by Hanno Olderdissen and starring Nico Marischka, aired on Tuesday 25 August at 21:30 on Rai 1. History moves the original setting to Germany, transforming the separation between the young protagonist and Lassie in the beginning of a long journey through the country. History had already become a film in 1943.
One of the elements characteristic of this version is the journey of Lassie that allows the film to cross different German landscapes, while parallelly follows the path of Flo in search of his friend. The journey thus becomes the way to tell the separation between the two protagonists without losing the adventure tone for the whole family, alternating moments of danger, encounters and difficulty in determining Lassie in returning home.
La trama
Florian, called Flo, is twelve years old and lives in southern Germany along with his parents and Lassie, a collie with whom he has a very deep relationship. However, the family situation changes suddenly when Father Andreas loses his job and the family is forced to move into a smaller home. The problem is that big dogs are not allowed in the new house.
In order not to be forced to renounce Lassie, parents decide to temporarily entrust it to Count von Sprengel, who is going to leave together with his nephew Priscilla towards the North Sea coast. The separation, however, does not go as planned. Lassie is treated badly by the caretaker Hinz and, as soon as he has the opportunity, he manages to escape. Thus begins a long journey through Germany to return to his true friend.
Flo can’t resign himself to the loss of his partner. The boy then puts himself in his research together with Priscilla, transforming history into a parallel adventure in which dog and child seek, each on their own way, to find the other.
