Joe Flood is used to killing without hesitation, but when he finds out he has a terminal illness he decides to face the situation in his own way, commissioning his own murder. The problem comes when he finds out that the diagnosis was wrong and that, by now, the killers are already on his tracks. It is the premise of The Killer’s Game, a 2024 action comedy directed by J.J. Perry, with Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella and Ben Kingsley, aired on Monday, August 31 at 21:20 on Italy 1, in the first TV viewing.
The plot recalls another movie Dead in a Week: Or Your Money Back but the protagonist is a writer who after several attempts to commit suicide contacts a hit man, a sin that in the meantime finds an engagement and love. In short, an unpublished plot but a particular version with Dave B chauffeur who has to escape from the assassins. The Killer’s Game is taken from Jay Bonansinga’s novel, published in 1997, his transposition had a long path with other actors who had been contacted for the role. The director is a former stuntman and coordinator of the stunts who then began his career as a director. Filming took place in Hungary between July and November 2023.

Joe Flood is an expert and ruthless professional killer, but with a rule: his targets are people he considers worthy of death. When he is diagnosed with terminal illness, Joe decides not to wait for the disease to take his course and commission his own murder. Shortly after, however, the discovery that completely changes the situation, the diagnosis was wrong, Joe is healthy, but by now the contract on his head has been activated and stopping it is not at all simple.
The assassins he has hired have already left to eliminate him and Joe suddenly finds himself on the other side of his own job: instead of hunting someone, he must escape a series of professional assassins willing to cash out the reward. To further complicate the situation is Maize, the woman whom Joe fell in love with. When she also ends up in the sights, the protagonist must not only try to survive, but also protect her and try to regain her love.

Dave Bautista plays Joe Flood, while Sofia Boutella dresses Maize Arnaud. Terry Crews as Creighton Lovedahl, Pom Klementieff as Antoinette and Ben Kingsley as Zvi Rabinowitz. Other performers include Scott Adkins, who plays the hit man Angus Mackenzie.
The film therefore brings together different interpreters particularly suitable for the action genre, with Bautista at the center of a story built around fighting, chases and clashes with increasingly dangerous opponents. Dave Bautista and Sofia Boutella had already played together in Hotel Artemis, the 2018 thriller directed by Drew Pearce.
