Years and years of uninterrupted programming in the afternoon of Italy 1, then the arrival of Disney+ and the availability continues on the platform, but the Simpsons continue to fascinate the Italian public who since September 15 will have a new chance to see them. The Simpsons arrive on Italy 2 every day at 20 with 2 episodes.
This new location on Italy 2 offers fans of all ages the opportunity to relive the gags, torments and sharp satires that made Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and all the yellow inhabitants of Springfield immortal icons of pop culture. Born from Matt Groening’s pencil in 1987 as a series of animated shorts for the Tracey Ullman Show, the most famous animated TV sitcom (with over 800 episodes at the active) debuted in the first evening as an autonomous series on December 17, 1989 on Fox, rapidly becoming a global cultural phenomenon. In Italy, the series landed on Canale 5 in 1991 and since 1997 moved to Italy 1, where it still aired.
Today, at almost four decades, the series celebrates its 38th season and the overcoming of the 800 episodes broadcast, confirming the longest animated series of TV history in the early evening. A legendary success, officially consecrated by the prestigious Time magazine that has also acclaimed the show as the “best TV series of the 20th century”.
I Simpson – curiosità
Yellow omines with four fingers – Behind Springfield’s unmistakable aesthetics, precise commercial and productive choices are hidden. The characteristic lemon yellow color was chosen by Matt Groening to make the series immediately recognizable during compulsive zapping. On the other hand, four-finger hands are born to reduce the time and cost of animation. The only exceptions concern God and Jesus, to which the authors always draw five fingers to emphasize the divine nature.
All in the family – Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Patty bear the real names of the parents, sisters and aunt of Matt Groening. The only one excluded from family names is Bart. His name was simply chosen because it is the analogue of “brat”, which in English means “monello”.
More than a simple theme – The sofa gag hides a technical secret: it is used to calibrate the exact duration of each episode for television needs. If the episode is short, the acronym turns into a elaborate short film. The historic record is for the 29th season, which has hosted a monumental theme song for 2 minutes and 15 seconds where Homer is lost within his own childhood memories, moving into a surreal universe that honors the history of cinema and animation.
Springfield horror story – Born in 1990, the Halloween specials “Fream makes ninety” (Treehouse of Horror) are a real cult: anthological episodes where the rules of the show are reset and the characters can turn and even die. A unique tradition concerns the titles of the queue, in which the names are stunned in horror (such as “Bat Groening”). Over the years the series has signed memorable parodies of masterpieces of cinema and TV, including The Shining, The Exorcist, Mechanical Orange, IT, Parasite and Stranger Things.

The prophecies factory – It is known the extraordinary ability of the show to anticipate reality. Among the most clamorous “prophecies” are Donald Trump’s election to the U.S. Presidency (announced 16 years in advance in the 2000 episode “Bart al futuro”) and the invention of the smartwatch, shown with absolute precision on Lisa’s fiancé’s wrist as early as 1995 in the episode “Lisa marriage”.
An invasion of Guest Star – The Simpsons officially hold the Guinness World Record for the largest number of guest stars in a TV series, with over 800 celebrities who lent their voice or appeared as caricatures on the show. Among the many names are Michael Jackson (who performed under the pseudonym), Rolling Stones, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Stephen Hawking and sports champions such as Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James.
