Centuries after the facts narrated in The War – The planet of monkeys humans have lost the use of the word and have become semi-feral, while monkeys live forgetfuls of Caesar and his own history. In the village of Clan Aquila life proceeds simple and peaceful, and Noa, along with friends Soona and Anaya, is facing the threshold of adult life. But when a handful of masked monkeys assaults the village and abducts its companions, Noa will embark on a journey to bring them home. But in order to succeed and defeat the mysterious leader of masked monkeys will have to find the leader in itself, and learn to trust a human who knows more than it seems..
Fantasy postapocalittico
The realm of the planet of monkeys is, basically, a fantasy blockbuster in post-apocalyptic sauce. The components are all: rival realms, coexisting races, old master guardians of ancient wisdom and ruins left by ancient and glorious civilizations. This does not want to be a note of demerit: the film about the genre in an absolutely competent manner, and the setting made of urban ruins claimed by nature is suggestive. Special innovations are missing, but it’s because this film is not looking for news. Not particularly new but always worthy of praise is the level of performance capture: technology has come to such a level to get all emotional beats exactly as if we were watching actors resume in live action.
Verso una nuova fase dell’era dei franchise?
After more than a decade in which each blockbuster or high-profile exit was a reboot, a sequel or part of a cinematographic universe, the audience is beginning to feel the “franchise fatigue”, the franchise fatigue, and the box office starts reporting it. Think, for example, of the crisis in which the Marvel studios entered the post-Endgame. The reign of the planet of monkeys, the fourth chapter of the reboot and tenth in total, approaches its being franchise film in an interesting way. That is, it uses its IP as a very vague canovaccio from which to take a couple of very strong elements and budget, but then goes in a rather personal narrative and iconographic direction. Is this the way of the future? We’ll see.
Il cast
Owen Teague plays Noa, a brave and inspiring young monkey from Clan Aquila. Lidia Peckham and Trevis Jeffery play his friends, respectively the faithful Soona and the shy Anaya, while Mae, the main human character of the film, is played by Freja Allan (who we saw dress Ciri’s shoes in The Witcher). Peter Macon plays Raka, a wise orango who will lead Noa on his journey. They complete the cast Kevin Durand in the role of the cruel Proximus and William H. Macy in that of his human servant Trevathan.
